Short answer: Our Hubbel lounge chair is a low, compact accent chair with a plywood frame, layered foam and two solid ash legs in an Oak or Walnut finish. It measures 27.0 inches (68.5 cm) wide, 32.7 inches (83 cm) deep and 27.8 inches (70.5 cm) high. Its seat is 15.7 inches (40 cm) high and 18.9 inches (48.1 cm) deep, the lowest and shallowest of our five lounge chairs, and its covers are removable and machine washable.
A low, shallow chair changes how a corner feels: it keeps sight lines open and leaves more floor in front of it, but it also sits differently from a deep armchair. The numbers below are the ones on our product page, so you can compare Hubbel with your space before you order.

What is the Hubbel lounge chair?
Hubbel is a compact lounge chair made of three parts: a seat, a backrest and two legs. The backrest connects to the seat base with V-shaped connectors, and the legs attach underneath with handscrews. The two planar legs are solid ash with a satin finish, available in Oak or Walnut, which gives the chair a light, lifted look.
The frame is plywood with layered foam and polypropylene fibre, and the covers are 100% polyester. For a different shape, look at our Naos lounge chair or Mira chair, or at our guide to choosing an accent chair.
How big is the Hubbel lounge chair?
These are the dimensions listed on our Hubbel product page. Overall size includes the legs.
How big is the Hubbel lounge chair?
| Measurement | Size |
|---|---|
| Overall (depth x width x height) | 32.7 x 27.0 x 27.8 inches (83 x 68.5 x 70.5 cm) |
| Seat height | 15.7 inches (40 cm) |
| Seat depth | 18.9 inches (48.1 cm) |
| Clearance under the front of the chair | 6.1 inches (15.5 cm) |
Two details are worth knowing. First, a shallow seat does not mean the smallest footprint: the overall depth includes the backrest and the legs, so the chair is 32.7 inches (83 cm) deep overall. Second, the clearance under the front of the chair is 6.1 inches (15.5 cm) on our product page. If you use a robot vacuum, compare its height with that clearance before you buy.
How does Hubbel compare with our other lounge chairs?
Hubbel has the lowest and shallowest seat of our five lounge chairs. Our Vela lounge chair has the smallest overall footprint.
How does Hubbel compare with our other lounge chairs?

| Hubbel | 27.0 inches (68.5 cm) | 32.7 inches (83 cm) | 15.7 inches (40 cm) | 18.9 inches (48.1 cm) |
| Mira | 27.6 inches (70 cm) | 33.5 inches (85 cm) | 19 inches (48.5 cm) | 20 inches (51 cm) |
| Naos | 31.9 inches (81 cm) | 31.7 inches (80.5 cm) | 17 inches (43.5 cm) | 22 inches (55.5 cm) |
| Cassini lounge chair | 37.0 inches (94 cm) | 31.3 inches (79.5 cm) | 16.5 inches (41.9 cm) | 22.6 inches (57.5 cm) |
Our Cassini lounge chair is the widest and has the deepest seat, with a swivel or stationary base. For the full comparison, read our guide to choosing an accent chair.
Which fabrics, colours and wood finishes does Hubbel come in?
Hubbel comes in seven colours across two fabrics, with an Oak or Walnut leg finish. Abrasion resistance is measured on the Martindale scale, where a higher number means a more abrasion-resistant fabric.
Which fabrics, colours and wood finishes does Hubbel come in?
| Fabric | Colours | Martindale rub count |
|---|---|---|
| Performance Chenille | Sage, Frost, Bordeaux, Espresso | 48,000 |
| Aquaforte Velvet | Chocolate, Aqua, Crumble | More than 200,000 |
Performance Chenille has a soft texture. Aquaforte Velvet is listed on our product page as water resistant and stain resistant. Fabric colours can change, so check the Hubbel product page for the current range, and order free swatches if you want to see them in your light. For more on how the fabrics wear, read our guides to performance fabric and sofa fabric types.
Are the Hubbel covers removable, and how do you care for them?
Yes. The covers on Hubbel are removable and machine washable, and each chair comes with a seat cover and a backrest cover.
- Performance Chenille: wash cold on a gentle cycle and air dry. Avoid wringing, bleach and high temperatures to preserve the soft texture.
- Aquaforte Velvet: wipe spills promptly with a damp cloth. For a deeper clean, machine wash cold on a gentle cycle and air dry.
Both fabrics are marked as pet friendly on our product page; that is our own assessment, and the Martindale numbers above give you the abrasion side of it. For a step-by-step approach, see our guide to cleaning your sofa by fabric type, which applies to chair covers as well.
Does Hubbel suit a reading nook?
Hubbel suits a reading nook when you want a chair that stays out of the way. The low seat at 15.7 inches (40 cm) gives a relaxed, lounging posture, and the 18.9 inch (48.1 cm) seat depth keeps the chair from pushing far into the room. It works beside a window, in a bedroom corner or next to a bookshelf, and it pairs well with a small side table for a lamp and a cup.
It is less suited to some people. If you like to curl up with your legs tucked under you, a deeper seat such as the Cassini lounge chair will feel roomier. If you find low seats hard to get out of, our Mira chair has the highest seat at 19 inches (48.5 cm). Some general advice, not a product specification: leave about 30 to 36 inches (76 to 91 cm) for a walkway beside the chair, and test the spot with painter's tape on the floor first.
How does Hubbel arrive and go together?
The chair ships in a lounge chair box measuring 30.3 x 27.6 x 20.5 inches (77 x 70 x 50 cm) and weighing 45.9 lbs (20.8 kg), plus a separate cover kit box measuring 22 x 16.9 x 14.6 inches (56 x 43 x 37 cm). Those sizes are useful if you are checking a tight stairwell or doorway; our guide to measuring stairs, elevators and doorways shows how.
Our product page describes assembly as tool-free, and the hardware box holds four handscrews and an Allen key. You attach the legs to the underside of the seat base, connect the backrest with the V-shaped connectors, and fit the covers. The assembly guide is available as a download on the product page. If a gap appears along the edges between the backrest and the seat base, the two are likely not connected properly.
Our recommendation
- Reading nook, bedroom corner or narrow wall: Hubbel, if you like a low seat and want a shallow seat depth.
- The smallest overall footprint: our Vela lounge chair, which is narrower and shorter front to back.
- A higher seat: our Mira chair or Naos lounge chair.
- The deepest seat, with the option to swivel: our Cassini lounge chair.
- Easy care: Hubbel, with removable machine-washable covers in either fabric.
To plan the wider room, see how to pair a sofa, an accent chair and a coffee table and our guide to sofa colours.
