Short answer: Blot the spill right away with a clean, dry cloth, working from the outside of the mark toward the centre. Do not rub. Then press a cloth dampened with plain water onto the area and blot again, step up to water and a mild soap only if the mark remains, and let the fabric air dry fully. Test any cleaner on a hidden spot first. Stain-resistant fabric buys you time to do this, but no fabric is stain-proof, and we cannot promise that any particular stain will come out.

Most sofa stains are decided in the first few minutes. A spill that is lifted off the surface is a small job, and one that is rubbed in or left to dry is a bigger one. This guide covers the first response, a method for each common stain, how our fabrics differ, and the point where washing a removable cover is the better choice. For a full guide to routine cleaning by fabric, see how to clean your sofa.

What should you do first when something spills?

Speed matters more than product strength. The longer a stain sets, the harder it is to remove, so start with what you have in the kitchen.

  • Lift off solids. Take away anything solid, such as food or mud, without pressing it into the fabric.
  • Blot, do not rub. Press a clean, absorbent cloth onto the spill to soak up as much liquid as you can. Rubbing can spread the spill or push it further into the fabric.
  • Work inward. Start at the outside edge of the spill and move toward the middle so the mark does not grow.
  • Use fresh cloth. Switch to a clean section of the cloth as it takes up liquid, so you are not putting the stain back.

That is general advice, not a product specification, and it applies to all of the stains below. Do not wait for guests to leave or for the end of the evening: a minute of blotting now saves a lot of effort later.

What is the basic spot-cleaning method for upholstery?

The steps below match the process we describe in our care guides. They work on the surface of the fabric and do not soak the cushion underneath.

  • Step 1, blot. Absorb the excess with a dry cloth as above.
  • Step 2, plain water. Press a clean cloth dampened with plain water onto the stain and hold it briefly, then blot it away. Wring the cloth out well so it is damp, not wet.
  • Step 3, mild soap. If the mark remains, clean the area gently with water and a mild soap. Avoid harsh products, and avoid anything containing bleach or strong solvents.
  • Step 4, rinse. Wipe the area with a clean, damp cloth to remove soap residue.
  • Step 5, dry. Let the fabric air dry completely before anyone sits on it.

Test a cleaner on a hidden section of fabric first, and wait 10 minutes before you carry on. Use only products that the care label on your cover allows. Wipe in slow, even strokes rather than scrubbing in circles.

How do you treat wine, coffee, grease, pet accidents and ink?

The first response is the same for each, and the follow-up depends on what spilled. Our own testing includes coffee, red wine, sauces and food spills, oils and greasy substances, and pet-related stains. One consistent result is that less oily substances tend to be easier to remove, and oil-based stains are more challenging because they interact differently with fabric fibres. The table below is general advice, so check your care label first.

How do you treat wine, coffee, grease, pet accidents and ink?

StainFirst moveIf a mark remainsWatch out for
Red wine and coffeeBlot right away, working from the outside inPress a water-dampened cloth onto the area, then blot; add a mild soap if neededColour can set as it dries, so do not leave it
Grease, oil and saucesLift off any solids, then blot without rubbingGentle water and mild soap, then rinse with a damp clothThese are the hardest to lift, so be patient and avoid scrubbing
Pet accidentsBlot up as much liquid as you canWater and mild soap, then rinse; on a removable cover, wash it per its care label for lingering odourLet the area dry fully
InkBlot only; do not rub, as ink spreads easilyStop and check your care label before trying anything strongerMay not come out at home, see the cover and protection options below
MudLet it dry, then lift off the dried soil and vacuum with an upholstery attachmentTreat any remaining mark with a damp cloth and mild soapWiping wet mud can push it into the weave

Ink is the honest exception. We would rather tell you that it can be difficult than suggest a trick that may spread the mark or damage the weave. If a stain is not shifting, stop, and do not escalate to stronger products without your care label's permission.

How do our fabrics differ when you spot clean?

How a spill behaves depends on the fabric. Stain resistance and pet suitability here are our own assessment, and the Martindale figure measures resistance to repeated rubbing. It does not measure how a fabric handles a spill, so use it as one input only.

How do our fabrics differ when you spot clean?

FabricMartindale cyclesStain resistanceSpot-cleaning notes
Aquaforte VelvetMore than 200,000ExcellentWater-repellent and stain-resistant, so spills sit on the surface longer; still blot quickly
Aquaforte78,000ExcellentBlot as above; the weave can trap pet hair
Performance Chenille48,000IntermediateNeeds quicker attention than Aquaforte; washes well
Performance Fabric48,000IntermediateA damp microfibre cloth in slow, even strokes works for light soiling
Textured Weave54,000LowerAvoid aggressive rubbing that could damage the weave
Corduroy15,000See notesThe ribbed channels need care: press and blot rather than scrub
Bouclé15,000LowerUse a barely damp cloth and press gently; do not wipe back and forth

Bouclé needs a gentler hand. The cover is machine washable, but we advise spot cleaning it instead to maintain its look, because washing can reduce the fluffy loft over time. That is why a careful spot clean is worth learning if you choose it. Our guide to sofa fabric types compares these fabrics more broadly, our guide to performance fabric explains what the label means, and our guide to stain-resistant sofas explains how to read the claims.

When is spot cleaning not enough?

Spot cleaning handles a single mark. If a spill is large, soaked through, or has left an odour, washing the cover is usually the better option, where your cover allows it.

  • Removable covers: the seat and back cushion covers are removable on our Ciello, Gaia, Atmosphere, Neptune and Orian sofas. On Ciello, the seat, back and arm cushion covers zip off and the base cover is held under the seat base with Velcro. Wash a removable cover cold with a mild, fragrance-free detergent, lay it flat to dry and put it back only when it is completely dry, unless your care label says otherwise. Our guide to how often to wash sofa covers covers the full routine.
  • Fixed upholstery: the arm and base covers on Neptune and Orian are fixed, so spot cleaning is the main option there. Our guide to cleaning and maintaining a sleeper sofa covers what can and cannot be washed on our sofa beds.
  • Check each product page: which parts come off differs by collection, so confirm it for the sofa you own. Our guide to removable covers vs slipcovers compares the collections, and our guide to sofa covers explains the options.
  • Set-in stains and accidents: if a stain cannot be removed at home, CozeyProtection+ covers set-in stains and accidental damage beyond what our standard 5-year warranty includes. It is something to consider at purchase if stain risk is a concern in your home.

What should you avoid when spot cleaning?

A few habits cause more damage than the original spill. Most of them are about doing too much.

  • Rubbing or scrubbing. It can distort the weave, spread the mark and leave a patch that looks worse than the stain.
  • Soaking the fabric. Too much water can leave watermarks and push the stain deeper. Wring the cloth out first.
  • Harsh products. Avoid bleach and strong solvents, and use only cleaners that your care label permits.
  • Skipping the hidden-spot test. A hidden area, such as the back or underside, is a better place to find out than the seat.
  • Using the sofa while it is damp. Let it dry completely first.

Our recommendation

Keep it simple and fast. Blot first, use plain water second, and reach for a mild soap only if the mark stays. If you are choosing a fabric with spills in mind, our Aquaforte Velvet has the strongest stain resistance of our fabrics, and Performance Chenille and Performance Fabric are intermediate. For bouclé, spot clean gently.

  • Busy household with pets or kids: choose an Aquaforte fabric and keep a clean cloth close by. Our guide to the most durable sofa fabric for pets goes into more detail.
  • A mark you cannot shift: stop, check your care label and, on a removable cover, consider washing it as described above.
  • Ink or a large spill: act quickly, blot only, and consider whether a cover wash or CozeyProtection+ is the right next step.

Frequently Asked Questions

Blot immediately with a clean, dry, absorbent cloth. Press down to soak up as much liquid as you can, and work from the outside of the spill toward the centre so that it does not spread. Do not rub, because rubbing can push the liquid deeper into the fabric. Lift off any solids first. Once most of the liquid is gone, press a cloth dampened with plain water onto the area and blot again, then let the fabric air dry. This is general advice that applies to all of our fabrics, and speed matters more than the strength of any product.

Blot at once, working from the edge inward, then press a clean cloth dampened with plain water onto the mark and blot it away. If a mark remains, clean it gently with water and a mild soap, rinse with a clean damp cloth and allow it to air dry fully. In our testing, less oily substances such as wine and coffee tend to be easier to remove than oily ones, but we cannot promise that any stain will come out. Test any cleaner on a hidden spot first, and use only products your care label allows.

Blot up as much liquid as you can, then press a damp cloth onto the area and blot again. If a mark remains, use water and a mild soap and rinse with a damp cloth. For lingering odours on a removable cover, machine washing is often the most effective option where your cover allows it: wash it cold with a mild, fragrance-free detergent, lay it flat to dry and put it back only when completely dry. Our Aquaforte Velvet is the fabric we rate highest for pet households, as our own assessment.

Possibly, but we cannot promise it. Blot the ink without rubbing, because rubbing spreads it across the weave. Then stop and check your care label before trying anything stronger, since an unsuitable cleaner can leave a ring or damage the fabric. Ink is one of the hardest marks to treat at home, particularly once it has dried. If the cover is removable, washing it as the care label directs may help. If a stain will not shift, CozeyProtection+ covers set-in stains and accidental damage beyond our standard 5-year warranty, so it is worth considering when you buy.

A dependable approach is also the simplest: blot, press with a cloth dampened with plain water, step up to water and a mild soap only if needed, rinse with a clean damp cloth and air dry. Work from the outside in, use slow, even strokes and wring the cloth out so it is damp rather than wet. Test any cleaner on a hidden section first and wait 10 minutes. Avoid bleach, strong solvents and aggressive scrubbing. Fabrics differ, so check how yours should be treated in the table above and on its care label.

Yes, and we advise it. Our bouclé covers are machine washable, but we recommend spot cleaning instead to maintain their look, because washing can reduce the fluffy loft over time. Use a vacuum on a low setting with a soft brush head, then use a barely damp cloth and press gently without wiping back and forth. Avoid bleach and strong solvents, test on a hidden section first and wait 10 minutes before you continue. Bouclé has 15,000 Martindale cycles and lower stain resistance than our Aquaforte fabrics, so blot spills quickly.

No. Stain-resistant means a spill sits on the surface long enough for you to blot it away, rather than soaking straight in. It does not mean a stain cannot set. Our Aquaforte fabrics use a C0 water-repellent treatment and have excellent stain resistance, while Performance Chenille and Performance Fabric are intermediate and need quicker attention. Oil-based stains can be harder to lift even on water-repellent fabric. All of our current fabrics are PFAS-free and OEKO-TEX certified, but you should still respond quickly to any spill.

Spot clean first for a single, fresh mark. Wash the cover when a spill is large or soaked through, when an odour lingers, or when spot cleaning has not been enough, provided the cover is removable. Wash cold with a mild, fragrance-free detergent, lay flat to dry, avoid the tumble dryer and reinstall the cover only when it is completely dry. Bouclé is the exception: it is machine washable, but we advise spot cleaning. On Neptune and Orian the arm and base covers are fixed, so those parts are spot cleaned.
