How Often Should You Wash Sofa Covers? A Care Schedule by Fabric

A practical wash schedule for removable sofa covers, with fabric-by-fabric care, shrinking and fading answers, and which of our covers actually come off.

A Cozey sofa with removable covers

Short answer: For a typical household, washing removable covers about once or twice a year, plus spot cleaning spills as they happen, is a sensible starting point. Homes with pets, young children or daily use may wash every few months. That is general advice, not a Cozey rule: our own wash testing assumes one wash a year, and the right rhythm depends on how the sofa is used and which fabric you chose.

Washing too rarely lets dirt and body oils build up in the fibres, while washing too often wears on any fabric. The goal is a rhythm that keeps covers fresh without over-washing them, and one that respects what each fabric needs.

Which of our sofa covers can you wash?

Only removable covers go in the machine, so start by checking what comes off on your sofa. Our Ciello, Gaia, Atmosphere and Cassini are built around removable covers, while Neptune and Orian are only partly removable.

  • Ciello: the seat, back and arm cushion covers zip off, and the base cover is held under the seat base with Velcro.
  • Gaia: the removable upholstery includes the seat cushions, back cushions, arms and base.
  • Atmosphere: the seat, back and arm covers are removable on all three versions (regular, storage and sleeper), and the cushion covers attach with Velcro.
  • Cassini: the removable upholstery includes the seats, curved wedges, corners, arms and backrests.
  • Neptune and Orian: the seat and back cushion covers are removable and machine washable, but the arm and base covers are fixed. Those parts need spot cleaning instead.

Because covers come off module by module, you can wash only the one that took the spill. Our guide to removable covers vs slipcovers compares them with loose slipcovers, and our sofa covers and slipcovers guide explains the wider options.

What is a good wash schedule for sofa covers?

Think in layers: quick upkeep often, spot cleaning when something happens, and a full cover wash on a slower rhythm. The timings below are general advice, not a product specification, because no schedule fits every home.

What is a good wash schedule for sofa covers?

TaskTypical householdPets, kids or daily heavy use
Vacuum with an upholstery attachmentEvery week or twoWeekly, or more often during shedding
Fluff and rotate loose cushions (Ciello, Gaia)Every week or twoEvery week or two
Spot clean spillsRight awayRight away
Wash removable coversOnce or twice a yearEvery few months, or when spot cleaning is not enough
Wash covers after an illness, a move or a long guest stayAs neededAs needed

The fluffing rhythm is the one number from our own care guidance: we suggest fluffing the loose cushions on Ciello and Gaia roughly every one to two weeks. Our guide to cleaning your sofa covers the vacuuming and cushion routine in more detail.

Wash covers sooner if they smell, look dull or feel gritty, even if the calendar says otherwise. Our guide to spot cleaning a sofa shows how to handle spills between washes, and spot cleaning first can keep a full wash further away.

How should each fabric be washed?

Our product pages give care instructions by fabric. Martindale counts measure abrasion resistance (a higher number means more rubs before wear shows) and do not change how you wash.

Our fabric types guide compares these textures side by side, and our guide to performance fabric explains how they resist stains, and our guide to stain-resistant sofas explains what that label means. If you are choosing a fabric for a busy home, our guide to the most durable sofa fabric for pets ranks them by our own assessment.

Can sofa covers shrink or fade?

Any textile can change with washing, so the useful question is how much and what causes it. We test for exactly this: our standard testing runs 15 machine-wash cycles, representing 15 years of washing once a year, and compares shrinkage, fit, shape retention, colour fading and shade consistency along the way. The details are in our guide to washable sofas for pets and kids.

That testing is not a promise that no cover will ever change. Customers with pets or young children may wash more often than once a year, and actual results depend on use and on following the care instructions.

  • Heat: high heat is a common cause of shrinkage in textiles (general advice), and our care text tells you to avoid high heat and air dry, so never tumble dry covers.
  • Over-washing: bouclé can gradually lose some of its fluffy loft after repeated washing, which is one reason we advise spot cleaning it.
  • Sunlight: direct sun can fade most fabrics over time, so consider where the sofa sits relative to a bright window.
  • Fit: put covers back only when completely dry, and zip or attach them as shown for your sofa so they sit correctly on the cushion.

How do you wash and reinstall covers?

The routine is short, and it is the same for most of our fabrics unless the care label says otherwise.

  • Check the label: confirm the fabric, and test any cleaner on a hidden area first.
  • Wash cold: use the gentle cycle and a mild, fragrance-free detergent. Avoid bleach, and avoid wringing on chenille and velvet.
  • Air dry: lay covers flat to dry and never use a tumble dryer.
  • Reinstall dry: refit each cover only once it is completely dry, so moisture is not trapped against the foam.

Wash one cover at a time if you can, so the sofa stays usable. For a sofa bed, our guide to cleaning a sleeper sofa covers bedding and moving parts as well.

Our recommendation

Pick the schedule that matches your household, then adjust for the fabric.

  • Typical home, light daily use: vacuum every week or two, spot clean spills, and wash covers once or twice a year.
  • Pets or young children: shorten the cover wash to every few months, choose Aquaforte Velvet or Performance Chenille where you can, and keep vacuuming weekly.
  • Bouclé covers: spot clean as your first step and keep full washes rare.
  • Aquaforte or Aquaforte Velvet: wipe spills right away and wash when a damp cloth is not enough.
  • Neptune or Orian: wash the removable seat and back covers on schedule and spot clean the fixed arms and base.

Frequently Asked Questions

For a typical household, washing removable covers once or twice a year, with spot cleaning in between, is a reasonable starting point. This is general advice rather than a Cozey rule. Our own wash testing assumes one wash a year, and we note that households with pets or young children may wash more often. If your covers smell, look dull or feel gritty, wash them sooner. Wash cold on a gentle cycle, air dry, and refit them only when completely dry. Check the care label for your fabric first.

Any fabric can shrink if it is treated roughly, and heat is the usual cause in textiles. Our care instructions say to wash cold on a gentle cycle, air dry and avoid high heat, which helps covers keep their size. We also test for shrinkage and fit across 15 wash cycles, representing 15 years of washing once a year. That testing does not guarantee that no cover will ever change, so avoid the tumble dryer, follow the label and refit covers only when they are completely dry.

Colour can change with repeated washing and with direct sunlight, as it can on most fabrics. Our wash testing compares colour fading and shade consistency across 15 cycles that represent washing once a year, and actual results depend on use and on following the care instructions. To slow fading, wash cold, avoid bleach, and keep the sofa out of strong direct sun where you can. Spot cleaning between full washes also reduces how often the covers need the machine.

Chenille, velvet, bouclé and textured weave deserve the most gentle handling. Our Performance Chenille and Aquaforte Velvet care text says to avoid wringing, bleach and high temperatures to preserve the soft texture. Textured Weave should not be rubbed aggressively, because that can damage the weave. Corduroy needs a soft brush after drying to restore the pile. Bouclé is machine washable, but we advise spot cleaning it to maintain its look. Performance Fabric and Aquaforte are straightforward: cold, gentle cycle, then air dry.

Our bouclé covers are removable and machine washable, but we advise spot cleaning them to maintain their look. Bouclé is a looped fabric, and it can gradually lose some of its fluffy loft after repeated washing, so a full wash is best kept for when spot cleaning is not enough. Blot spills gently instead of scrubbing, and use only a barely damp cloth. If you do wash a cover, use a cold gentle cycle, air dry it flat and refit it only when completely dry. Cloud bouclé is offered on our Atmosphere sofa.

It depends on the collection. On Ciello, Gaia, Atmosphere and Cassini, the covers on the seats, backs and arms are removable, so you can wash any of them. On Neptune and Orian, only the seat and back cushion covers come off, while the arms and bases have fixed covers that need spot cleaning. Because covers come off module by module, you can wash just the one that needs it and leave the rest in place. Check the product page for your sofa before planning around it.

No. Our care guidance is to air dry, lying covers flat, and to avoid high heat. Tumble drying risks shrinking the cover, which can make it fit poorly on the cushion and can affect the texture of chenille, velvet and bouclé. Give the cover enough time to dry fully before you refit it, because trapped moisture against the foam is not desirable. If a cover feels stiff after drying, a soft brush helps restore the pile on corduroy. Always check the care label for your fabric first.
