Choose the Cozey Foam Mattress if you want a close, cradling feel that absorbs movement. Choose the Cozey Hybrid if you want more bounce, more airflow and firmer edges. Both are medium-firm, both use the same 2" Serene® comfort layer, and both are made in Canada with a 15-year warranty and a 100-night trial. The real difference is what sits underneath: 6" of high-density foam in the Foam Mattress, and 6" of individually wrapped pocket coils in the Hybrid.
We made two mattresses instead of one because the same comfort layer can feel quite different depending on what supports it. Some people love sinking slightly into a bed that stays perfectly still when their partner moves. Others want to feel more on top of the mattress, with a bit of spring when they change positions.
Below is everything we'd want to know before choosing: what's inside each mattress, how they feel, who they suit, what they cost and where each one falls short. The specs come straight from our product development documents, not marketing copy.

What's Inside Each Cozey Mattress?
The top half of both mattresses is identical. The difference starts about 4" down, where the Foam Mattress continues with dense foam and the Hybrid switches to pocket coils.
Cozey Foam Mattress (10"), top to bottom
- Quilted cover: A soft polyester knit with a 390 GSM top panel and a 180 GSM border.
- 2" Serene® comfort foam: The layer you actually feel. It contours to your body and spreads out pressure at the shoulders and hips.
- 2" high-density transition foam: Firmer than the comfort layer, so you ease into support instead of hitting it.
- 6" high-density support foam: The firmest layer. It keeps your spine aligned and stops your hips from sinking too far.
Cozey Hybrid Mattress (12"), top to bottom
- Quilted cover: The same 390 GSM top panel and 180 GSM border.
- 2" Serene® comfort foam: Identical to the Foam Mattress.
- 2" high-density transition foam: Identical to the Foam Mattress.
- 6" individually wrapped pocket coils: About 1,200 coils in a Queen. Each one moves on its own, which gives the bed its bounce and lets air move through the core.
- High-density foam edge rail: A 3" x 6" foam border around the coils, so the edge doesn't collapse when you sit on it.
- 1" high-density base foam: A stable bottom layer for the coils to sit on.
Every foam in both mattresses is CertiPUR-US® certified, which means it's tested for formaldehyde, heavy metals, phthalates and VOC emissions. Both mattresses also pass the Canadian mattress flammability standard (CAN/CGSB-4.2).
Is Serene Foam the Same as Memory Foam?
Summary: No. Serene® feels a lot like memory foam when you lie down, but it's a different material. It responds faster, doesn't change with room temperature and doesn't hold heat the way traditional memory foam does.
This is the question we get most, and it's a fair one. When you press into Serene, it contours slowly the way memory foam does. But memory foam (viscoelastic foam) gets its feel from a chemistry that reacts to body heat. Serene, developed by Carpenter Co., is a conventional polyurethane foam built with billions of microscopic air capsules. Those capsules resist being squeezed, which is where the contouring feel and the extra support come from.
That difference shows up in a few practical ways. The figures below come from Carpenter's lab testing on 2" foam samples, not on our finished mattresses, but they explain why we chose it.
Is Serene Foam the Same as Memory Foam?
| What it means for you | Serene® foam | Traditional memory foam |
|---|---|---|
| Feel in a cold bedroom | Same as in a warm one. No detectable temperature sensitivity in normal use | Can feel noticeably firmer until it warms up |
| Heat | Released heat about 18% faster in the first 30 minutes of testing | Holds heat longer |
| Peak pressure, lying on your back | 58.7 mmHg | 220 mmHg |
| Average shoulder pressure, lying on your side | 19.2 mmHg | 24.0 mmHg |
| Rebound (ball rebound test) | About 20% | About 5% |
The rebound number is the one you'll notice most. Memory foam is famous for that stuck-in-the-sand feeling when you try to roll over. Serene springs back about four times faster, so turning over takes less effort, while still absorbing far more motion than a standard bouncy foam (about 45% rebound).
So if you've been searching for a "memory foam mattress" because you like that hugged feeling, both Cozey mattresses will give you something close to it, without the heat and slow response that put a lot of people off memory foam.
How Do They Feel? Firmness, Bounce and Motion
Summary: Both are medium-firm. The Foam Mattress sits around 5.5 to 6 out of 10 and feels like you're settling into the bed. The Hybrid is slightly firmer, around 6 to 6.5, and feels like you're lying on top of it.
Firmness
We made both mattresses medium-firm because it's the firmness most people prefer. Our goal was a mattress the largest number of people would love, not one built for a niche. It's soft enough at the surface to take pressure off your shoulders and hips, and firm enough underneath that your lower back doesn't sag.
Because the top 4" are the same in both, the first thing you feel when you lie down is almost identical. The coils underneath make the Hybrid a touch firmer overall, about half a point on a 10 point scale, and the bigger difference is in how each bed responds once you're on it.
Foam Mattress: close and quiet
The dense foam core absorbs your weight evenly, so you sink in slightly and the bed stays put around you. There's very little bounce, and no noise at all. People who like a cocooned feel, or who share a bed with a restless sleeper, tend to prefer it.
Hybrid: springy and responsive
The pocket coils push back as you move, which makes rolling over and getting out of bed easier. You sit a little higher in the mattress, and the reinforced edge means you can sit on the side of the bed to put on your socks without sliding off. Because each coil is wrapped in its own fabric pocket, it doesn't squeak like an old spring mattress.
Motion transfer
If your partner gets up at 5 a.m., the Foam Mattress is the one less likely to wake you. The Hybrid still isolates motion well, since each coil moves independently, but you'll feel a little more of the bounce.
The first few nights
Both mattresses are ready to sleep on about 30 minutes after unboxing and reach full shape within 24 to 48 hours. Like most new mattresses, they can feel slightly firmer for the first few nights while the foam settles and your body adjusts.
Which Is Better for Hot Sleepers, Side Sleepers and Couples?
Summary: Hot sleepers should lean Hybrid, couples who wake easily should lean Foam, and side and back sleepers do well on either. Neither is the right choice for very heavy or strict stomach sleepers.
Which Is Better for Hot Sleepers, Side Sleepers and Couples?
| If you are... | Our pick | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A hot sleeper | Hybrid | Air moves through the coil layer, so the core doesn't trap heat |
| A side sleeper | Either | The 2" Serene® layer takes pressure off shoulders and hips on both |
| A back sleeper | Either | Medium-firm support keeps your lower back from sagging |
| A combination sleeper | Hybrid | The bounce makes changing positions easier |
| A stomach sleeper | Hybrid, if you're on the lighter side | It holds your hips a bit higher. Heavier stomach sleepers may want something firmer |
| Sharing with a restless partner | Foam | It absorbs the most motion |
| Someone who sits on the edge of the bed | Hybrid | The foam rail keeps the edge firm |
| Over 250 lb | Neither, honestly | Both are rated for up to 250 lb per sleeper |
If you sleep hot
Both mattresses use Serene® foam, which doesn't hold heat the way traditional memory foam does. The Hybrid goes further: 6" of open coil space underneath gives heat somewhere to go, which a solid foam core can't do. If you regularly wake up warm, start with the Hybrid.
If you sleep on your side or back
This is who we designed both mattresses for. Side sleepers need enough give at the shoulder and hip, and back sleepers need the lower back held up. The comfort and transition layers are the same in both mattresses, so either one works. Pick based on how much bounce and airflow you want.
If you share the bed
For couples, the choice usually comes down to who wakes up more easily. A light sleeper paired with someone who tosses and turns will do better on the Foam Mattress. If neither of you is bothered by a bit of movement, the Hybrid gives you more edge support and cooler sleep, which matters more with two people in the bed.
If you weigh more than 250 lb
To be upfront: both mattresses are rated for up to 250 lb per sleeper. Above roughly 230 to 250 lb, most people get better long-term support from a thicker or firmer mattress built for that load. We'd rather you buy the right bed than return ours.
How Long Do Cozey Mattresses Last?
Summary: In durability testing equivalent to 15 years of use, the Cozey Foam Mattress softened less than 6%. Both mattresses carry a 15-year limited warranty that covers indentations of 1" or more.
What our testing shows
Every mattress softens a little over time. The question is how much. In our durability testing, which simulates 15 years of nightly use, the Cozey Foam Mattress lost less than 6% of its firmness. In practical terms, it should feel very close to the way it did in year one for a long time.
The Hybrid uses the same Serene® and transition foams on top. Underneath, pocket coils hold their shape well over time, and the foam rail keeps the edges from breaking down, which is usually the first place a mattress shows wear.
The 15-year warranty
Both mattresses come with a 15-year limited warranty against manufacturing defects. That includes any visible, permanent indentation of 1" or more, measured with no weight on the mattress, as long as it's been used on proper support. Normal softening and changes in comfort preference aren't covered, which is standard across the industry.
How to make it last
- Rotate it every 4 to 6 months. Turn it head to foot so you're not always sleeping on the same spot.
- Don't flip it. Both mattresses are built to be slept on one side only.
- Use proper support. A solid platform, a slatted base with gaps no wider than 3", a box spring or the floor all work. Queen and King sizes need center support. Our Ara Bed is designed to work with both.
- Spot clean the cover. The mattress cover isn't machine-washable, so treat spills with a damp cloth and mild soap. A mattress protector is the easiest way to keep it fresh.
Where they're made
Both mattresses are made in Canada and designed by our team in Montreal. That matters to a lot of our customers.
Sizes, Delivery, Setup and the 100-Night Trial
Summary: Both come in Full, Queen and King, ship free in one box, and set up in about 30 minutes. If it's not right, we'll pick it up for free within 100 nights. No minimum, and no need to keep the box.
Sizes
Sizes
| Size | Foam Mattress (W x L x H) | Hybrid Mattress (W x L x H) |
|---|---|---|
| Full | 52.5" x 74.5" x 10" (133 x 189 x 25 cm) | 52.5" x 74.5" x 12" (133 x 189 x 30.5 cm) |
| Queen | 59.5" x 79.5" x 10" (151 x 202 x 25 cm) | 59.5" x 79.5" x 12" (151 x 202 x 30.5 cm) |
| King | 75.5" x 79.5" x 10" (192 x 202 x 25 cm) | 75.5" x 79.5" x 12" (192 x 202 x 30.5 cm) |
Our mattresses measure about half an inch under the rounded standard sizes (a standard Queen is listed as 60" x 80"). That's normal for foam and hybrid mattresses, and standard sheets fit without any issue. For the Hybrid, which is 12" tall, look for fitted sheets with pockets of at least 12".
Delivery
Shipping is free across Canada. Each mattress arrives rolled and compressed in a single box with a built-in handle:
Delivery
| Box size | Box weight | |
|---|---|---|
| Foam Mattress | 44" x 17.5" x 17.5" | 52 lb (Full), 62 lb (Queen), 72 lb (King) |
| Hybrid Mattress | 44" x 18.5" x 18.5" | 59 lb (Full), 70 lb (Queen), 86 lb (King) |
The box is the same size no matter which mattress size you order, so it fits through apartment doors, stairwells and elevators. Two people make it easier to carry up stairs, especially for a Queen or King.
Our mattresses are in stock about 95% of the time, and in-stock orders usually arrive within 2 to 7 days. Ordering a bed at the same time? We can hold your mattress so both arrive together, which can take a little longer depending on the bed's availability.
Setup
- Bring the box into the bedroom before opening it.
- Unroll the mattress flat on your bed base.
- Use the included bag cutter to carefully cut the plastic and slide it off.
- Give it about 30 minutes before sleeping on it. It reaches its full shape within 24 to 48 hours.
A new foam smell is normal for the first day or two. It's harmless and fades quickly with a bit of airflow.
The 100-night trial
Sleep on it for up to 100 nights. If it's not the right fit, contact us and we'll schedule a free pickup and give you a full refund. There's no minimum number of nights, and you don't need the original box. Whenever possible, we donate returned mattresses instead of sending them to landfill.
Trying it in person
You can try our mattresses at Cozey stores. Every store has samples of both so you can feel the layers side by side, and most have one of the two mattresses on display, which varies by location. If you want to lie on a specific one, check with your nearest store before you visit.
Buying it with the Ara Bed
If you buy a Cozey mattress together with the Ara Bed, you get $100 off the mattress, plus free sheets and a free duvet. Both mattresses sit directly on the Ara, no box spring needed. We also sell mattress protectors and bedding on their own.
What Are the Downsides of Each?
No mattress is right for everyone, including ours. Here's where each one falls short.
- It sleeps warmer than the Hybrid. Serene® doesn't trap heat like memory foam, but a solid foam core still breathes less than open coils.
- Less bounce. If you change positions a lot through the night, you'll feel more resistance than on the Hybrid.
- Softer edges. Sitting on the very edge of the bed compresses it more.
- It costs $200 more in every size.
- More motion transfer. It still isolates movement well, but a restless partner is easier to feel.
- A heavier box. A King box weighs 86 lb, so plan on two people to carry it.
Both mattresses
- One firmness only. If you know you need a soft or very firm bed, neither is the right pick.
- Rated up to 250 lb per sleeper.
- The cover is spot clean only. It isn't removable for machine washing, so a mattress protector is worth having.
Which Cozey Mattress Should You Choose?
Which Cozey Mattress Should You Choose?
| If your priority is... | Choose |
|---|---|
| Not feeling your partner move | Foam |
| Sleeping cool | Hybrid |
| A cradled, sink-in feel | Foam |
| Easy movement and bounce | Hybrid |
| Sitting on the edge of the bed | Hybrid |
| The lowest price | Foam |
| A memory foam feel without the heat | Either, Hybrid if you run hot |
| Side or back sleeping | Either |
My pick: I sleep on the Hybrid, and it's the one I recommend. It has also been our most popular mattress since we launched it. My guess is that people like its slightly firmer feel, and I'm one of them.
If you're still on the fence, our honest tie-breaker is temperature and movement. If you sleep hot or change positions a lot, go Hybrid. If you value quiet and stillness above everything else, go Foam. And with a 100-night trial and free pickup, you're not locked in either way.
