Best Sofa Beds in Canada: How to Choose a Comfortable Sleeper Sofa

A great sofa bed should be comfortable enough to sit on every day, supportive enough for two adults to sleep on, easy to operate and attractive enough that you would want it in your living room even if it never converted into a bed.

A Neptune Sofa Bed

That sounds straightforward. But designing a sofa that does all those things well is surprisingly difficult.

Traditional sofa beds often involve compromises. Some are bulky and difficult to move through doorways. Others require heavy mechanisms, complicated assembly or uncomfortable sleeping surfaces. And many look more like temporary guest beds than furniture you'd choose for its design.

At Cozey, we believe customers shouldn't have to make those compromises.

We spent 24 months developing our first patent-pending sleeper system, Neptune, because we wanted to combine everything that makes a great sofa with everything that makes a practical guest bed.

That meant comfortable sitting and sleeping, a properly sized sleeping surface for two people, compact boxed delivery, tool-free assembly, an easy-to-operate mechanism, washable covers and modern design.

Since then, we've developed two more distinct sleeper systems—Orian and Atmosphere Sleeper—because different customers need different styles, bed sizes, seating experiences and configurations.

Here's what we've learned about choosing a great sofa bed in Canada, including the engineering details worth understanding before you buy.

What Should You Look for in a Good Sofa Bed?

A sofa bed needs to perform two very different jobs.

During the day, it should be a comfortable, attractive sofa. At night, it needs to provide a supportive sleeping surface.

The best sleeper sofas don't sacrifice one experience for the other.

We recommend evaluating seven characteristics:

Sitting comfort Does the sofa offer the firmness, seat depth and back support you enjoy? Sleeping comfort Is the surface supportive, sufficiently cushioned and comfortable across its individual sections? Sleeping dimensions Is the bed large enough for the people using it, and does it fit the room when extended? Ease of conversion Can one person open and close it without significant effort? Delivery and assembly Can the furniture actually get into your home, especially through narrow doors or staircases? Everyday practicality Are the covers washable? Is there somewhere to store bedding? Long-term durability Is the mechanism engineered for repeated use, and can the sofa be maintained or expanded over time?

At Cozey, we believe the challenge is delivering all seven together.

A comfortable bed isn't particularly useful if the sofa is uncomfortable during the day. An attractive sofa bed loses much of its value if the mechanism is so difficult to operate that nobody wants to open it.

The combination matters.

Why Did Cozey Spend Two Years Developing Its First Sofa Bed?

When we started designing Neptune, we identified several shortcomings in conventional sleeper sofas.

They were often heavy, bulky, difficult to deliver and complicated to assemble. Many used mechanisms that made the furniture feel less comfortable or look less attractive.

We wanted to approach the problem differently.

Our objective was to create a modular sleeper sofa that arrived in manageable individual boxes and could be assembled without tools.

At the same time, the sleeping surface needed to have proper bed dimensions, accommodate two adults comfortably and provide enough support for a good night's rest.

We also wanted an easy-to-operate mechanism, modern styling and removable, washable upholstery.

The hardest engineering challenge wasn't solving any one of those requirements.

It was solving them all at the same time.

A large, comfortable bed is easier to design when there are no packaging constraints. A lightweight product is easier to engineer if you eliminate features. And a sofa can be easier to assemble if you're willing to sacrifice structural complexity.

We weren't willing to solve one problem by creating another.

It took 24 months to develop and launch Neptune's first patent-pending sleeper system.

That experience continues to shape our approach to sleeper furniture: great products come from getting many important details right together, not from optimizing one feature in isolation.

Are Sofa Beds Actually Comfortable to Sleep On?

Yes, a well-designed sofa bed can be very comfortable, although not every sleeper will feel the same.

Sleeping comfort depends on several factors.

Foam Firmness and Thickness

The amount of foam matters, but more foam doesn't automatically mean better comfort.

Some people prefer a firm, supportive sleeping surface. Others prefer additional cushioning.

Cozey's three sleeper systems provide different experiences.

Neptune and Orian use approximately five inches of firmer, supportive foam within their sleeping surfaces.

Atmosphere Sleeper provides approximately eight inches of softer cushioning.

This gives customers options depending on their preferences.

Proper Body Support

A sofa bed should distribute weight comfortably and avoid creating prominent pressure points.

That's why we evaluate different sleeping positions during development rather than assuming that everyone sleeps the same way.

Transitions Between Sleeper Sections

Modular sleeper sofas have separate structural sections.

Poorly designed transitions can make the joints between those sections uncomfortable.

At Cozey, we work to create supportive surfaces and reduce the sensation of transitions between modules.

Our Sleep Kits also include mattress toppers designed to provide additional cushioning and help smooth those transitions.

Enough Space for Two Adults

A sofa that unfolds isn't necessarily a practical double bed.

The actual deployed dimensions matter.

We design Neptune and Orian around conventional bed-size sleeping configurations, while Atmosphere Sleeper offers different arrangements depending on the number of modules and ottomans.

Before choosing, consider how many people will sleep on the bed and whether they need room to move comfortably.

How Does Cozey Test Sofa-Bed Comfort?

We don't judge sleeper comfort solely by sitting on a prototype for a few minutes.

Our development process includes employee sleep trials, evaluation of different sleeping positions, and foam and structural testing.

Those trials have helped us identify improvements that weren't obvious from the engineering alone.

What We Learned While Developing Neptune

Early Neptune prototypes were too firm.

The sleeping surface provided support, but we wanted a more comfortable experience, so we adjusted the cushioning.

We also discovered that the sofa's seated back support wasn't quite right.

That led us to add a lumbar pillow to every Neptune seat, improving comfort when sitting upright.

These improvements illustrate the challenge of designing multifunctional furniture.

A sofa bed must perform well in both positions. Improving the sleeping experience shouldn't make the sofa less comfortable, and improving the seating shouldn't compromise the bed.

For us, real-world testing helps identify where the balance needs to change.

Which Cozey Sofa Bed Is Best for You?

Summary: Neptune suits supportive seating and integrated storage, Orian suits compact queen-size sleeping, and Atmosphere Sleeper suits softer lounging and design customization.

We offer three different sleeper systems because customers have different preferences, living spaces and functional needs.

They share Cozey's approach to easy assembly, modularity, modern design and washable upholstery, but their comfort, dimensions and mechanisms are distinct.

Neptune: For Supportive Seating and Maximum Storage

Neptune is an excellent option for customers who want an upright, supportive sofa with practical sleeping and storage functionality.

Its taller backrest, firmer cushions and included lumbar pillows create a distinct seating experience.

Every seat also includes integrated storage, making Neptune particularly useful for blankets, sheets and pillows.

A three-seat full-bed configuration is approximately 228 cm wide as a sofa.

Neptune's sleeper sections extend into a bed using an elevated mechanism designed for easy one-person operation.

Orian: For a Compact Queen-Size Guest Bed

Orian is designed for customers who want a more compact sofa that opens into a queen-size sleeping surface.

A two-seat configuration is approximately 185 cm wide as a sofa.

Its firm seat cushioning is paired with softer, loose back pillows.

Unlike Neptune, Orian sleeper seats don't contain integrated storage. Customers can add dedicated storage seats or ottomans where compatible.

The result is a distinct design with queen-size sleeping functionality in a relatively compact footprint.

Atmosphere Sleeper: For Softer Sleep and Design Flexibility

Atmosphere Sleeper offers a softer sleeping experience with thicker cushioning.

It also shares Atmosphere's customizable design language, including different arm styles and upholstery options.

Its sleeping surface extends closer to the floor rather than using the same elevating mechanism as Neptune and Orian.

This makes it particularly attractive for customers who enjoy a more relaxed, lounge-oriented experience and want significant aesthetic flexibility.

The right choice depends on which combination of comfort, space, storage and appearance matters most to you.

Are Modular Sofa Beds Easier to Deliver Into Canadian Apartments?

One of the biggest problems with traditional sleeper sofas is getting them into the home.

This is especially relevant in Montréal walk-ups, Toronto condos, older townhouses and apartments with narrow stairwells or small elevators.

A conventional sleeper sofa can be difficult to manoeuvre because the entire sleeping mechanism is built into one large frame.

Cozey approaches delivery differently.

Our sofa modules ship in individual boxes designed around the following limits:

  • No more than 50 lb (approximately 23 kg) per box.
  • No more than 48 inches (122 cm) on the longest side.
  • No more than 130 inches (330 cm) in combined length and girth.

This makes the individual packages easier to transport than an entire assembled sofa bed.

It's still important to measure narrow doorways, stairwell turns and other access restrictions, but boxed modular delivery helps address one of the category's biggest frustrations.

What About Sofa Bed Assembly?

Cozey's sleeper sofas assemble without tools.

We wanted to avoid asking customers to install heavy, complicated mechanisms themselves.

Once assembled, the sleeper system is integrated into the modules and designed for easy operation.

Most adults can open and close the mechanism independently without significant lifting or physical strength.

We regularly demonstrate this in Cozey stores, where customers can try the mechanisms for themselves.

Are Cozey Sofa Beds Easy to Open and Close?

Summary: A Neptune or Orian sleeper seat converts in approximately 20 seconds and an Atmosphere Sleeper section in approximately 10 seconds, but bedding must be removed before returning to sofa mode.

Yes. Ease of operation was one of our fundamental development requirements.

A sofa bed isn't truly practical if you avoid opening it because the mechanism is difficult to use.

Our designs allow customers to convert individual sleeper sections quickly and without tools.

As a general guide, a Neptune or Orian sleeper seat can be converted in approximately 20 seconds, while an Atmosphere Sleeper section takes approximately 10 seconds.

These times describe the mechanism itself, not the full process of preparing bedding.

Do You Need to Remove the Cushions?

Neptune's main components remain integrated. Its lumbar pillows can be stored under the seats.

Atmosphere Sleeper keeps the cushions integrated during conversion.

Orian requires customers to remove its loose back pillows, although they're relatively compact.

Can You Close the Sofa With Bedding Still On?

No.

For all three sleeper systems, sheets, mattress toppers and other bedding need to be removed before returning the furniture to sofa mode.

This is worth considering if you plan to use the bed frequently.

Mechanically opening the bed is quick, but making it up and putting the bedding away still takes time.

Can You Convert Just One Seat?

Yes.

This is one of the advantages of Cozey's independently operating sleeper modules.

You can extend one module to create a chaise-like lounging position while leaving neighbouring seats upright.

Neptune and Orian extend at regular seating height.

Atmosphere Sleeper extends much closer to the floor.

That means different people can use the same sofa in different ways at the same time.

Are Cozey Sofa Beds Comfortable for Two People?

We design our sleeper systems to provide sufficient sleeping space for two adults in appropriate configurations.

But dimensions aren't the only consideration.

Two people also need supportive cushioning and a surface that doesn't transfer excessive movement.

How We Reduce Motion Transfer

Our sleeper systems use distinct supporting sections.

In a three-seat Neptune bed, there are six sleeping sections: one seat and one back section per module.

A two-seat Orian uses six sections: the seat, back and middle folding section of each sleeper module.

A three-seat Atmosphere Sleeper similarly uses six sections across its cushions and seat bases.

This construction helps localize movement rather than transferring every movement uniformly across one continuous structure.

It doesn't eliminate motion transfer entirely, but minimizing disturbance is part of our design approach.

Recommended Weight for Long-Term Use

For preserving long-term comfort and foam performance, we recommend approximately 350 lb (159 kg) per person.

This is a long-term use recommendation, not a statement that the frame will fail above that weight.

Higher sustained loads can accelerate foam softening and compression, even when the structure can support the load.

We want customers to understand both structural strength and long-term cushioning durability.

Do You Need Special Bedding for a Sofa Bed?

Not always.

Neptune and Orian offer standard-size sleeping configurations, so customers can use regular bedding that matches the chosen bed dimensions.

Atmosphere Sleeper has different sleeping dimensions, making fitted bedding more important.

We recommend the Cozey Sleep Kit for all three systems because it's designed around the specific sleeping surface.

Why We Include a Mattress Topper

The topper is designed to accomplish two things.

First, it adds cushioning.

Second, it helps smooth the transitions between individual sleeper sections, creating a more continuous sleeping feel.

Our Sleep Kits also include appropriately sized bedding and pillows, helping complete the sleeping setup.

The exact contents depend on the selected kit and configuration.

For us, the bedding is part of the product experience—not merely an accessory.

How Durable Are Sofa-Bed Mechanisms?

Moving components understandably raise questions about durability.

A sleeper sofa may be opened and closed hundreds of times over its ownership, particularly if it's used regularly for guests.

We subject Cozey sleeper mechanisms to thousands of opening and closing cycles during development to simulate more frequent use than customers would typically experience.

Our objective is to engineer the sleeper mechanism for a useful life comparable to our regular sofas, rather than allowing it to become the component that wears out first.

What About Sofa Bed Mechanism Safety?

When designing Neptune and Orian, we also considered potential finger-pinching points, unexpected movement and other operating hazards.

Customers should still follow the operating instructions and keep hands clear of moving joints.

Do Sofa Bed Mechanisms Need Maintenance?

They're designed for straightforward ownership.

If hinges begin creaking, appropriate lubrication may help.

However, we don't recommend independently tightening, adjusting or modifying a sleeper mechanism unless our Customer Happiness team has specifically instructed you to do so.

Are Washable Covers and Storage Important?

For a sofa that serves as both living-room furniture and a guest bed, practicality matters.

Food, drinks, pets and daily use can all affect upholstery.

Our sleeper collections offer removable, machine-washable covers on eligible components.

Atmosphere has fully removable and replaceable upholstery, while Neptune and Orian offer removable seat and back cushion covers.

Customers should review the care instructions for their chosen collection and fabric.

Storage is another consideration.

Neptune includes storage in every seat, so bedding can remain nearby when the sofa is closed.

Orian offers separate storage modules and ottomans.

Atmosphere offers storage elsewhere in its modular range, but not inside its sleeper modules.

These differences can matter just as much as mattress comfort, particularly in small spaces.

Can You Expand a Modular Sofa Bed Later?

Yes, and this is one of our favourite advantages of modular sleeper furniture.

Customers can purchase additional compatible modules rather than replacing their entire sofa when they need more room.

Neptune and Orian owners can add sleeper or storage seats.

Atmosphere Sleeper owners can add compatible sleeper seats.

Importantly, adding a sleeper seat can expand the sleeping surface itself.

With Neptune and Atmosphere Sleeper, another sleeper seat extends the length of the bed.

With Orian, it increases the width.

An expanded Orian configuration no longer corresponds to a conventional standard mattress size, so fitted bedding needs particular consideration.

We also work to support customers purchasing compatible modules years after their initial order, including made-to-order options when a matching module isn't stocked.

Availability and compatibility should always be confirmed before ordering.

Is a Sofa Bed Good for Sleeping Every Night?

That depends on the person, the sofa bed and the length of time involved.

A comfortable sleeper can be an excellent solution for visiting family, overnight guests and temporary living arrangements.

However, a dedicated mattress may be preferable for someone planning to sleep on the same surface every night over many years.

The right solution depends on comfort preferences, support needs, room dimensions and whether the sofa also needs to function as everyday seating.

We're confident in the comfort and durability of our sleeper systems, but we don't believe every sofa bed should automatically replace a dedicated mattress for every person.

Which Cozey Sofa Bed Should You Choose?

Before making a decision, measure the sofa in both its seated and extended configurations.

Consider where you'll store the bedding, whether you prefer a firm or soft sleeping surface, and how much floor space will remain when the bed is open.

You can explore configurations through Cozey's online tools and request help from our design team if you need guidance.

Final Thoughts: A Great Sofa Bed Shouldn't Feel Like a Compromise

At Cozey, we believe a sofa bed should feel like a great sofa and a great guest bed, thoughtfully combined.

It should look beautiful, feel comfortable, fit through your doorway, assemble without tools and convert without complicated mechanisms.

It should accommodate real life through washable upholstery, useful storage options and the flexibility to adapt as your home changes.

And it should be engineered to remain reliable through years of use.

That's what took us 24 months to accomplish with Neptune, and it's the same philosophy behind Orian and Atmosphere Sleeper.

Each collection offers a different combination of design, comfort, dimensions and functionality.

The best sofa bed isn't the one with a single impressive feature. It's the one that gets all the important details right, together. That's what we're working to create at Cozey.
