Short answer: Our Atmosphere sofa is a modular sofa with medium-firm seating that comes in three versions: regular, storage and sleeper. Each storage seat holds 79.4 litres, and a sleeper layout opens to a surface about 88.6 inches (225 cm) long and 59.1 inches (150 cm) deep. You also choose a square back, with a seat depth of 27.3 inches (70 cm), or a round back, with 29.3 inches (75 cm). The covers are removable on all three versions.
Atmosphere has a few choices to make: the seat type, the back style, the arm height and the fabric. Each one changes the size, the function or the care, so this guide goes through what is different. If you are still comparing collections, start with which Cozey sofa is right for you.

What is the Atmosphere sofa?
The Atmosphere sofa is built from separate seat, back and arm modules that connect without tools. You can start with a two-seater and add seats, a corner, a chaise, an ottoman or a long ottoman later. Our guide to how many modules you need can help you plan the first order.
The frame is larch and plywood. The seat cushions use D35 high-density foam, the backs use D30 foam, and the regular seat base has steel springs. The legs are black plastic and 0.8 inches (2 cm) tall. These are the main module sizes, measured overall with the legs:
- Armless seat and back module: 29.5 inches (75 cm) wide, 40.6 inches (103 cm) deep and 29.1 inches (74 cm) high.
- Corner module: 40.6 x 40.6 inches (103 x 103 cm) and 29.1 inches (74 cm) high.
- Ottoman: 29.5 x 29.5 inches (75 x 75 cm) and 17.5 inches (44.5 cm) high.
- Long ottoman: 40.6 x 20.1 inches (103 x 51 cm) and 17.5 inches (44.5 cm) high.
- Chaise: available in the Regular and Storage styles; check the product page for its size.
- Square arm: 11.0 inches (28 cm) wide, 21.3 inches (54 cm) high as a regular arm and 29.1 inches (74 cm) high as a high arm.
How do the regular, storage and sleeper versions differ?
All three versions use the same back, arm and cover options. What changes is the seat base. The regular seat is everyday seating. The storage seat hides a compartment inside the base. The sleeper seat unfolds into a bed.
How do the regular, storage and sleeper versions differ?
| Version | Seat height | What it adds | Modules |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular | 17.5 inches (44.5 cm) | Everyday seating | Armless, corner, chaise, ottoman and long ottoman |
| Storage | 18.1 inches (46 cm) | 79.4 litres in each seat, corner and ottoman; 74.5 litres in the long ottoman | Armless, corner, chaise, ottoman and long ottoman |
| Sleeper | 17.3 inches (44 cm) | A bed surface about 88.6 x 59.1 inches (225 x 150 cm) when open | Armless, corner and ottoman |
The three seat types differ in height and appearance, so they are not compatible with one another. Choose one type for the whole sofa. For help choosing between ottomans, our guide to storage ottomans that double as seating compares them across our range.
The sleeper opens with a three-seat layout, or with two seats and the sleeper ottoman. This is not a standard queen mattress size, so we make a custom sleep kit for it that attaches to loops inside the seat cover. Individual sleeper modules can also open on their own, which gives you extra room to lounge without opening the whole sofa. Square or round back: which should you choose?
Square is the clean, structured look and round is the softer one. The difference is also practical, because the round style is a little deeper to sit in and a little narrower overall.
Square or round back: which should you choose?
| Measurement | Square style | Round style |
|---|---|---|
| Overall depth | 40.6 inches (103 cm) | 38.6 inches (98 cm) |
| Seat depth | 27.3 inches (70 cm) | 29.3 inches (75 cm) |
| Back and arm height | 29.1 inches (74 cm) | 30.9 inches (78.5 cm) |
| Arm width | 11.0 inches (28 cm) | 9.1 inches (23 cm) |
| Two-seater with two arms | 81.1 inches (206 cm) wide | 77.2 inches (196 cm) wide |
| Three-seater with two arms | 110.6 inches (281 cm) wide | 106.7 inches (271 cm) wide |
The square style comes with regular or high arms, and it is the style that works with the long ottoman and the square arm. The round style has its own rounded arms, comes with lumbar cushions, and is not compatible with the long ottoman or the square arm. If you are deciding on depth, our sofa seat depth and height guide compares our sofas side by side.
Which Atmosphere covers are removable, and how do you care for them?
The covers on the seats, backs and arms are removable on all three versions, so you can wash them or change the look of the sofa with a new set. The cushion covers attach with Velcro. The frame and foam stay in place. For a wider look at easy-clean options, see our guide to the best washable sofas for pets and kids.
- Washing: for chenille, Performance Fabric, textured weave and corduroy covers, machine wash cold on a gentle cycle and air dry. Avoid wringing, bleach and high heat.
- Bouclé: the Cloud covers are removable and machine washable, but we advise spot cleaning them to maintain their look.
- Cushions: the seat and back cushions are built into the modules, so you press and smooth them. The lumbar and decorative cushions are loose, so you fluff and rotate those.
Here is how the Atmosphere fabrics compare. Abrasion resistance is measured with the Martindale test, and a higher count means more rubs before wear shows.
Which Atmosphere covers are removable, and how do you care for them?
| Fabric | Martindale rub count | Example colours |
|---|---|---|
| Performance Chenille | 48,000 | Sage, Frost, Harbor Blue, Bordeaux, Cobblestone, Carbon, Espresso, Platinum |
| Performance Fabric | 48,000 | Mocha, Cerulean |
| Performance Textured Weave | 54,000 | Parchment, Lemon Zest, Tangerine, Ash, Nightfall |
| Textured Weave | 54,000 | White Sand |
| Bouclé | 15,000 | Cloud |
| Corduroy | 15,000 | Cypress Green, Dune |
| Aquaforte Velvet | More than 200,000 | Aqua, Chocolate, Crumble |
Cloud bouclé is available with the square back only, and corduroy is available on the Storage and Sleeper versions only. Colours change over time, so check the configurator for what is available. Our guide to cleaning your sofa covers spills and stains by fabric type.
Who is the Atmosphere sofa for?
It suits you if you want storage built into the sofa itself, a guest bed that does not need a separate room, or a deep seat with firmer support. The round style also helps in a narrower space, since a two-seater with two arms is about 3.9 inches (10 cm) narrower than the square version.
It may not suit you if you want very soft, loose cushions that you sink into. In that case, look at our Ciello and Gaia sofas, compare them in our Atmosphere vs Ciello guide, and read our sofa comfort guide for how seat firmness compares.
Our recommendation
Start with what you need the sofa to do, then choose the back style.
- You want hidden storage for blankets, games or bedding: choose the storage version, which has 79.4 litres in each seat, corner and ottoman.
- You host overnight guests: choose the sleeper version, which opens to about 88.6 x 59.1 inches (225 x 150 cm), and add the sleep kit.
- You want simple everyday seating: choose the regular version.
- You like a deep, relaxed seat or a softer look: choose the round back, with a seat depth of 29.3 inches (75 cm).
- You prefer a structured look or want to use the long ottoman: choose the square back, with regular or high arms.
- You need to save width in a small room: choose the round arms.
