Will the Cozey Ara Bed Work With My Mattress?

A complete mattress compatibility guide covering thickness, slats, weight limits, box springs, adjustable bases and bed sizes.

Short answer: Ara is designed to support a properly sized memory-foam, latex, hybrid or traditional innerspring mattress directly on its supplied slats. We recommend a mattress around 9 inches (22.9 cm) thick or more for attractive proportions, and have confirmed that mattresses up to 16 inches (40.6 cm) can be used. A box spring is not recommended, and Ara is not designed for an adjustable electric foundation.

Which mattress types work with Ara?

Which mattress types work with Ara?

Mattress constructionAra compatibility
Memory foamCompatible on Ara’s supplied slat system
LatexCompatible on Ara’s supplied slat system
Hybrid foam and coilsCompatible on Ara’s supplied slat system
Traditional innerspringCompatible on Ara’s supplied slat system

Compatibility with these common constructions does not automatically override your mattress manufacturer’s requirements. If a third-party mattress warranty calls for a maximum gap between slats or a particular foundation design, check that requirement before pairing it with any bed frame.

How thick should your mattress be?

How thick should your mattress be?

Mattress thicknessWhat to expect
Under 9 in / 22.9 cmStructurally usable, including an 8-inch mattress, but it may sit visually low relative to the upholstered frame.
9–12 in / 22.9–30.5 cmTypically a practical choice for balanced proportions and an exposed headboard.
13–16 in / 33.0–40.6 cmCompatible; taller profiles conceal more of the chosen headboard.

The 9-inch recommendation is about appearance and the mattress sitting at an appropriate height relative to the Ara upholstered frame. It is not a tested structural safety minimum. An 8-inch mattress can still be used. The most visible consequence of a very thick mattress is that more of the headboard is hidden behind it.

For someone who wants a tall, luxurious-looking mattress, we would compare photos or dimensions of the selected Ara headboard before buying. Pillow, Round, Square and Extended headboards have different visual proportions, so the same 15-inch mattress can change their appearance in different ways.

Do you need a box spring?

No. Ara is a platform-style bed with an integrated slat support system, so the mattress is intended to rest directly on those slats. We advise against placing a traditional box spring on top: it adds unnecessary height, alters the sleeping position and changes how much of the headboard remains visible. If your mattress manufacturer insists on a specific alternative foundation, verify the requirement before purchasing Ara.

Can you use an adjustable electric bed base?

No. Ara is designed exclusively around its own supplied mattress-support slat system. Do not plan to remove the slats and replace them with a motorised adjustable foundation. If lifting the head or foot of the mattress electrically is essential to you, choose a bed system explicitly designed for an adjustable base.

What supports the mattress?

Ara uses a modular steel structural frame and engineered laminated veneer lumber (LVL) slats. The product specifications list slats approximately 15 mm thick and 75 mm wide. Nominal slat spacing is 67 mm on Full frames and 57 mm on Queen and King frames. The slats are assembled as part of the Ara system and should be installed as instructed.

These gap measurements matter for foam, latex and hybrid mattresses because different mattress manufacturers may specify a maximum unsupported gap. A mattress can be broadly compatible with slatted platforms yet have warranty conditions specific to the brand and model. Check your mattress care instructions rather than assuming every manufacturer has the same rule.

How much weight does Ara support?

How much weight does Ara support?

Ara bed sizeMaximum combined load
Full600 lb (272 kg)
Queen800 lb (363 kg)
King900 lb (408 kg)

These are the limits published in the Ara Upholstered and Ara Wood assembly instructions and include the mattress and all occupants together. They are not per-person limits. Storage and non-storage versions share the same bed-size capacity. Individual storage compartments have a separate 20 lb (9 kg) load limit each.

For example, on a Queen bed, add the weight of the mattress to the combined weight of the people sleeping on it. The total should not exceed 800 lb (363 kg). If a mattress is especially heavy, factor that into the calculation instead of looking only at the occupants.

Will your existing mattress fit the frame?

Will your existing mattress fit the frame?

North American mattress sizeTypical mattress dimensions
Full / Double54 × 75 in (137 × 191 cm)
Queen60 × 80 in (152 × 203 cm)
King76 × 80 in (193 × 203 cm)

These are customary North American mattress measurements, not the external dimensions of Ara. The upholstered frame and headboard occupy extra floor and wall space. Match Full with Full, Queen with Queen and King with King, and confirm the actual dimensions of any existing mattress, especially if it is a specialty size or imported.

Does the headboard style change mattress compatibility?

Within the same size, Ara Upholstered lets you pair compatible Round or Square frame styles with Round, Square, Pillow or Extended headboards, subject to availability. The headboard can change wall width and total installed depth, but it does not turn a Queen support platform into a King platform. Keep the frame, mattress and headboard within the same compatible bed size.

A tall mattress also interacts with the headboard visually. A person who reads in bed may prefer a cushioned Pillow headboard; someone whose room is narrow front-to-back may prefer the more compact Round or Square style. Check total installed bed measurements in addition to the mattress footprint.

Does choosing storage change what mattress you can use?

No. Ara’s structural support comes from the same underlying frame and slat concept. Storage models have four side-access drawers and do not require you to lift the mattress to access them. The important extra measurement is the space needed beside the bed to open the drawers, especially if nightstands sit close to the frame.

Before reusing an existing mattress: six checks

  • Confirm the mattress’s actual width and length; do not rely solely on its marketing name.
  • Check the mattress manufacturer’s foundation and slat-spacing requirements.
  • Confirm the mattress and occupant weight together remain within Ara’s published load limit.
  • Decide whether the mattress height gives you the headboard appearance you want.
  • Do not add a box spring or replace the slats with an adjustable electric base.
  • Measure the assembled bed, including its headboard and the drawer-opening area if you choose storage.

For most customers, the best match is straightforward: choose the correct mattress size, use Ara’s supplied slats, confirm any third-party mattress foundation requirements, and pick a mattress height that works with your preferred headboard.
