A well-designed bed should do more than support your mattress. It should provide reliable structural support, fit your home, reflect your personal style and remain practical to maintain as your needs change.
But when shopping for a bed, it's difficult to judge all these qualities from photographs.
An upholstered headboard might look beautiful, but what supports the mattress underneath? A wooden bed might look sturdy, but how is it actually constructed? If the frame arrives in separate boxes, will it feel stable once assembled? And what happens if you want to change the appearance of your bedroom in a few years?
At Cozey, these questions shaped the development of our Ara Bed System.
We didn't want to create just another bed frame with a predetermined appearance.
We wanted customers to be able to create a bed that felt like their own — choosing the frame shape, headboard design, storage configuration, colour and fabric.
We also wanted to bring some of the characteristics that made our modular sofas distinctive into the bedroom: personalization, manageable delivery, easier assembly, removable and machine-washable upholstery, and the ability to maintain or replace individual components.
Ara was therefore designed around four equally important principles:
- Structural stability and durability: A supportive steel foundation designed for everyday residential use.
- Compact packaging and convenient delivery: Modular components that are easier to bring through doors, hallways and staircases.
- Easier assembly, disassembly and moving: A frame system designed to be put together and taken apart without transporting one oversized structure.
- Personalization and adaptability: A bed system that lets customers choose the headboard, frame style, storage, fabric and colour that suit their home.
The challenge wasn't to achieve one of these objectives independently. It was to bring all four together in the same product.
This guide explains how we approached that challenge, how Ara is constructed, what its weight limits mean and what customers should realistically expect from long-term ownership.

Why Did Cozey Design Ara as a Bed System Instead of a Conventional Bed?
Many beds are sold as fixed designs.
You select a model, choose a size and perhaps pick from a few upholstery colours. The headboard, frame shape and storage configuration are often predetermined.
We wanted a different experience.
With Ara, we started from the idea that customers should be able to build the bed that fits their preferences, rather than choose a complete design that may not offer the combination they want.
Someone might love a rounded upholstered frame but prefer a square headboard.
Another customer might want a broad, statement-making headboard with a simple frame.
A couple in a smaller bedroom might prioritize drawers, while someone who prefers a lighter visual appearance might choose a non-storage frame.
We wanted those choices to be possible within one coordinated system.
This thinking came naturally from our experience designing modular sofas.
Cozey customers already value being able to choose the configuration, upholstery and appearance of their furniture.
For Ara, we applied that same philosophy to the bedroom, while developing the structure specifically for the demands of a bed.
Four Priorities, One Bed
A steel structure could help us provide a stable foundation.
Modular frame sections could make shipping and moving more convenient.
A thoughtful connection system could simplify assembly.
And compatible external frames, headboards and removable covers could allow customers to personalize the design.
The important part was making these features work together.
For us, Ara is not simply a platform bed that happens to offer different headboards. It's a customizable bed system built around a common structural foundation.
How Can You Customize the Ara Bed?
Ara Upholstered offers several levels of personalization.
Rather than choosing only a colour, customers can make decisions that change both the bed's appearance and how it functions in their bedroom.
Choose Your Bed Frame Shape
Ara Upholstered offers two primary frame styles:
- Round: Softer, curved exterior edges that create a more relaxed, sculptural appearance.
- Square: Cleaner, straighter lines for a more structured, architectural appearance.
Both use the Ara structural platform.
This means the exterior style can change without requiring a completely different underlying mattress-support design.
Choose Storage or Non-Storage
Both Round and Square upholstered frame styles have storage and non-storage configurations.
With storage, the bed incorporates four side-access drawers, two on each side. Without storage, the frame maintains a simpler exterior arrangement.
This choice is about more than appearance.
Customers who need additional space for folded clothing or bedding may prefer the storage version. Others may prioritize the simpler assembly and lower component count of a non-storage design.
Choose Your Headboard
Ara Upholstered offers four headboard styles:
| Headboard | Design character |
|---|---|
| Round | Soft, curved silhouette |
| Square | Clean, geometric shape |
| Pillow | A softer appearance with upholstered pillows |
| Extended | A wider headboard that makes a stronger visual statement |
Within the upholstered collection, compatible headboards and frames can be mixed and matched in the same bed size.
You don't have to choose a rounded headboard simply because you prefer a rounded frame.
For example, a rounded base can be paired with a square headboard for a contrast between soft and structured forms.
The Extended headboard can create a different overall bedroom composition, while the Pillow design offers another upholstered aesthetic.
Each choice affects the final appearance and may change the bed's overall dimensions. That's why we recommend evaluating the complete configuration rather than looking only at the mattress size.
Choose Your Fabric and Colour
This was particularly important to us.
We wanted Ara to share the advantages customers already associate with Cozey sofas.
The upholstered collection uses familiar Cozey upholstery materials from our furniture range, offered in different colours and textures.
Depending on the selected component and current assortment, customers can choose between different fabric and decorative finish options.
Rather than forcing everyone into one neutral upholstered bed, we wanted people to be able to create something that fits their own interior.
Removable and Machine-Washable Covers
We also wanted personalization to be practical.
Ara Upholstered has removable, machine-washable fabric covers on its frame and supported upholstered headboard components.
This is an important distinction from a permanently upholstered bed.
Customers can remove eligible covers for cleaning according to the selected fabric's care instructions.
Compatible replacement covers can also provide a way to refresh the bed's appearance without replacing its structural frame.
For us, this was one of the strongest opportunities to bring the Cozey sofa philosophy into the bedroom.
A bed should be personalizable when you buy it, but it should also be easier to care for after you've lived with it.
How Is Ara's Structural Frame Constructed?
Underneath the customizable exterior, Ara uses a black powder-coated steel structural frame.
Rather than one oversized structure, the frame is divided into four connecting quadrants.
These sections come together inside the bedroom to form the main foundation.
Why Four Steel Quadrants?
We selected this approach to balance structural support, compact delivery and easier assembly.
A traditional one-piece frame may be inconvenient to transport through a narrow staircase, apartment hallway or doorway.
A four-part structure allows customers to carry the individual pieces into the bedroom before assembling the complete frame.
This can also make disassembly more practical when moving homes.
However, making furniture easier to transport wasn't enough.
We wanted the assembled bed to have a stable, supportive foundation for everyday use.
That's why the steel quadrants, supporting legs and connection system were developed to work together.
How Many Supporting Legs Does Ara Have?
The structural frame uses four corner legs and four round supporting legs.
The round legs help connect and support the frame sections. The corner legs help support the exterior corners.
The slat system is then installed above the frame.
This underlying structure is shared across the Ara design system, allowing different compatible exterior designs to be developed around the same foundation.
Is Every Part of Ara Made From Steel?
No.
The primary structural frame is steel, but the slats are engineered wood and the visible exterior components vary.
Ara Upholstered uses engineered-wood panels, foam and fabric upholstery.
Ara Wood uses finished wood-based exterior components.
These materials have different roles.
The fact that a bed has a soft upholstered exterior or visible wood finish shouldn't be confused with the construction of the main structural support system.
What Is Ara's Weight Capacity?
The current Ara assembly instructions specify the following maximum total loads.
| Bed size | Maximum load |
|---|---|
| Full / Double | 600 lb (272 kg) |
| Queen | 800 lb (363 kg) |
| King | 900 lb (408 kg) |
These limits include the combined weight of the mattress and everyone using the bed.
For example, the Queen's 800 lb capacity is not an additional allowance on top of the mattress weight. The mattress itself counts toward the total.
Do Different Headboards or Fabrics Change the Weight Limit?
Changing a compatible headboard or upholstery colour doesn't change the published structural frame weight rating.
The main foundation is designed separately from the decorative fabric and exterior appearance.
Similarly, choosing storage doesn't increase the maximum supported sleeping load. The storage drawers have their own limits.
Does a Higher Weight Limit Guarantee a Longer Lifespan?
No.
Maximum loading capacity and long-term durability are different measurements.
The weight limit identifies a specified maximum load. It doesn't independently prove how the structure performs after many years of repeated movement, assembly or use.
We wouldn't turn a published load capacity into a promise that Ara will last a particular number of decades.
Actual performance depends on proper assembly, use, maintenance and other conditions.
What Supports the Mattress on Ara?
Ara uses 15 mm laminated veneer lumber (LVL) slats.
LVL is an engineered wood material made by bonding layers of veneer together.
The slats are organized into assemblies using nylon straps, helping keep them positioned during installation.
Slat Dimensions
The Ara technical specifications identify approximately:
| Specification | Measurement |
|---|---|
| Slat thickness | 15 mm (0.59 in) |
| Slat width | 75 mm (2.95 in) |
| Full slat spacing | 67 mm (2.64 in) |
| Queen slat spacing | 57 mm (2.24 in) |
| King slat spacing | 57 mm (2.24 in) |
These measurements matter when evaluating mattress compatibility.
Why Does Slat Spacing Matter?
Different mattresses may require different levels of underlying support.
For example, some mattress manufacturers specify the maximum permitted distance between slats.
If the foundation doesn't meet those requirements, the mattress may not perform as intended. This can also have implications for the mattress manufacturer's warranty.
We therefore recommend checking the specifications of the mattress you plan to use, rather than assuming every mattress will work with Ara.
Does Ara Need a Box Spring?
Ara is designed as a slatted platform-style bed.
It includes its own mattress-support foundation, so a separate conventional box spring generally isn't required.
However, the appropriate setup depends on the mattress manufacturer's requirements.
An unnecessary extra foundation can also change the sleeping height and how much of the selected headboard remains visible above the mattress.
For a system designed around visual customization, those proportions deserve attention.
Does Modular Construction Make Ara Less Sturdy?
Not inherently.
A modular bed is assembled from separate components.
That tells you how the furniture is delivered and assembled, but not automatically how strong it is.
What matters is the completed structure, the connections and the quality of the installation.
Why We Made Ara Modular
Like our sofas, Ara was designed around the reality that furniture needs to move through people's homes.
Customers may live in apartments, move between homes or have limited access through narrow hallways.
We wanted the bed to be manageable without sacrificing its basic structural purpose.
The four-quadrant steel frame is part of that approach.
What Is the Trade-Off?
Modular furniture has connection points.
Those connections need to be installed correctly.
A frame with loose or incomplete joints may develop movement or noise, even if its individual components are sound.
We recommend following the assembly instructions, using the supplied hardware and checking that all structural components are secured before using the bed.
Modularity is not a substitute for structural engineering. It's a design approach that needs good engineering to succeed.
Does Ara Squeak, Creak or Move?
A squeaking bed can be frustrating, particularly for couples or lighter sleepers.
We're not aware of a recurring pattern of complaints about Ara squeaking, creaking or feeling unstable based on the feedback currently known to us.
However, that is not a guarantee that every Ara bed will always be silent.
Any bed frame can potentially make noise.
What Causes Bed-Frame Noise?
Common causes include loose connections, incorrectly positioned slats, an uneven floor, contact between components, or movement elsewhere in the sleeping setup.
Sometimes the sound comes from the mattress or contact between the headboard and a wall rather than from the main frame.
What Should You Do if Ara Makes Noise?
Start by checking the assembly instructions.
Confirm that the frame quadrants are properly connected, the supporting legs are secured and the slats are installed correctly.
Make sure the bed is positioned on a stable, level surface.
If the problem continues, contact Cozey's Customer Happiness team.
Our team can help identify the source and assess whether an adjustment or replacement component is appropriate.
We don't recommend modifying the structure with unauthorized hardware.
How Does Ara Upholstered Compare With Ara Wood?
Canadian customers have two distinct Ara design families.
Both are built around the Ara steel structural platform, but their exterior materials, headboards and configuration choices differ.
| Feature | Ara Upholstered | Ara Wood |
|---|---|---|
| Main structural foundation | Modular steel frame | Modular steel frame |
| Mattress support | LVL slats | LVL slats |
| Exterior appearance | Fabric upholstery | Wood-finish panels |
| Frame choices | Round or Square | Fluted or raised Leg |
| Storage option | Round and Square storage frames | Fluted storage frame |
| Headboard designs | Round, Square, Pillow, Extended | Round or Fluted |
| Appearance choices | Fabric, colour and selected finish details | Oak or Walnut finishes |
| Routine surface care | Removable, machine-washable covers | Appropriate wood-finish care |
Ara Upholstered
Ara Upholstered is designed for customers who appreciate softer shapes, fabric texture and the ability to personalize the bed through different upholstery combinations.
Its removable covers are especially valuable for anyone who wants practical fabric maintenance or the option to refresh compatible upholstery later.
Ara Wood
Ara Wood brings a different design language to the same underlying structural concept.
It includes fluted styling and a raised leg-frame option, with Oak and Walnut finishes.
Its exterior uses wood-veneered engineered panels, with solid ash elements in certain designs.
We think transparency about wood construction matters.
The entire bed shouldn't be described as solid oak or solid walnut simply because it has an Oak or Walnut finish.
Which Is More Durable?
We wouldn't claim that one is automatically more durable than the other.
Both use the common structural platform.
The choice depends more on exterior materials, design preferences, maintenance and the desired configuration.
Upholstery can show staining, pilling or fabric wear. Finished wood can experience scratches, moisture damage or other surface wear.
These cosmetic considerations are separate from the performance of the underlying steel frame.
The wood and upholstered families should be configured within their respective compatible ranges. Customers shouldn't assume every component from one family can be mixed with the other.
How Does Customization Affect Long-Term Ownership?
For us, customization isn't just about the initial shopping experience.
It's also about avoiding the assumption that customers should have to replace an entire piece of furniture whenever their preferences change.
Removable Covers
A customer might love Ara's structural foundation but want a different fabric colour later.
With compatible removable upholstery, changing the appearance doesn't necessarily mean replacing the frame.
Replaceable Components
A component can become damaged while the rest of the furniture remains functional.
The ability to obtain individual parts provides another way to maintain the bed.
Headboard and Frame Choices
Ara's design allows compatible headboards and frames to be selected independently at purchase.
Where separately sold compatible components are available, customers can also explore modifications after purchase.
However, not every component or conversion kit is necessarily available at all times.
We recommend confirming any intended changes with Customer Happiness before purchasing parts.
Why This Matters to Cozey
Our modular sofas helped establish a simple idea: customers benefit when furniture can be adapted to their space and preferences.
We wanted Ara to carry that philosophy into the bedroom.
That includes a choice of shapes, functional configurations, upholstery and maintainable components.
We believe it makes Ara more personal than a conventional fixed-design bed.
Does Choosing Storage Affect Ara's Sturdiness?
Ara's storage configurations include four drawers, two on each side.
These are designed for access without lifting the mattress platform.
However, the drawers aren't the primary components supporting the mattress and occupants. The steel frame and slats perform that function.
Does the Storage Version Have the Same Bed Weight Limit?
Yes.
The published frame capacities remain 600 lb for Full, 800 lb for Queen and 900 lb for King, including mattress and occupants.
What Is the Drawer Weight Limit?
Each storage compartment has a separate specified maximum load of 20 lb (9 kg).
This is the limit for stored belongings, not the sleeping structure.
Why Did We Choose Drawers?
We wanted customers to retrieve belongings without lifting the mattress or removing the bedding.
Someone can open a drawer while their partner is sleeping, without raising the platform they are lying on.
That convenience was a deliberate design decision.
However, drawers need sufficient space to open and can be obstructed by nightstands or nearby furniture.
Customers should plan their bedroom layout before selecting a storage configuration.
Is Ara Easy to Assemble?
Ara was designed to make a large bed more manageable to deliver, assemble and move.
Its structural components arrive separately and are connected inside the bedroom.
Main Frame Assembly
The four steel quadrants are assembled and secured using the supporting legs.
The exterior panels attach through the designed connection system.
The slats and headboard are then installed.
What About the Headboards?
Different headboard styles may use different assembly steps.
Some arrive in foldable sections, while wider designs involve multiple components.
Customers should follow the instructions for the exact headboard selected.
Is Assembly Tool-Free?
The main frame uses hand fasteners and clip-on elements.
Storage drawer assembly involves additional hardware, including screws and an included Allen key.
It would therefore be misleading to say every component of every Ara configuration is completely tool-free.
Can One Person Assemble It?
Some main structural steps are designed to be manageable individually.
However, the current assembly instructions recommend two adults for larger pieces.
Having assistance is sensible when positioning bulky components and attaching the headboard.
Why Does Assembly Matter for Durability?
Connections need to be installed as designed.
Loose hardware or incorrectly positioned parts can affect stability and produce unwanted noise.
We recommend following the assembly guide carefully and avoiding improvised structural modifications.
How Long Should the Ara Bed Last?
We designed Ara for everyday residential use.
Its steel frame, LVL slats and modular construction are intended to provide a practical structural foundation.
However, we don't believe customers should be promised a precise lifespan based solely on the materials.
Weight capacity isn't equivalent to a multi-year durability guarantee.
We also don't have published long-term fatigue-test results supporting a specific number of years of service.
Actual performance depends on assembly, use, maintenance, loading and conditions.
What Helps a Bed Last Longer?
Correct assembly matters.
So does using an appropriate mattress, respecting weight limits, maintaining connections and addressing damaged components promptly.
For Ara Upholstered, customers should also follow the fabric-care instructions.
For Ara Wood, the finish should be protected and cleaned appropriately.
What About the Warranty?
Cozey offers a five-year limited warranty for qualifying manufacturing defects, subject to its terms.
The warranty period is not a predicted expiration date for the bed.
Normal wear and damage outside the warranty's terms should be considered separately.
Can You Replace Individual Ara Components?
Yes. Individual Ara replacement parts can be supplied through Cozey's Customer Happiness team.
We think this is one of the important practical advantages of designing furniture around distinct components.
If a slat, leg, connector, upholstered panel or other replaceable part becomes damaged, the entire bed doesn't automatically need to be discarded.
Our team can help identify the affected component and assess a suitable replacement.
How Do You Request a Part?
Contact Customer Happiness with your order information and a description of the issue.
Photographs can help identify the part and the relevant connection.
Availability and compatibility depend on the specific component, model and production generation.
We don't promise that every part will remain available indefinitely, but we want customers to have a clear path to request replacement components.
Why Does Repairability Matter?
A bed frame may remain structurally functional while one component needs attention.
Replacing only the affected part can be more practical than purchasing a completely new bed.
This also fits our broader design philosophy: furniture should be easier to maintain and adapt rather than treated as an entirely disposable object.
What Should You Look For When Buying a Customizable Bed?
Whether you're considering Ara or another bed, we recommend evaluating both structural quality and design flexibility.
Ask yourself:
- Does the bed have a clearly specified support system?
- Are its total weight limits published?
- What material are the frame and mattress slats made from?
- Can the headboard and frame be selected independently?
- Is storage available in the design you prefer?
- Can you choose the fabric and colour, or only a fixed finish?
- Are upholstered covers removable and washable?
- Can you obtain replacement parts?
- Will the packaged components fit through your home's access points?
- Can the bed be disassembled if you move?
- Are there restrictions on future component compatibility?
These questions help distinguish meaningful personalization from a product that simply comes in several colours.
We believe a truly customizable bed should combine aesthetic choice with practical function.
Final Thoughts: More Than a Bed Frame
When we created Ara, our ambition was to develop more than a sturdy bed.
We wanted to bring some of the qualities customers appreciate in Cozey sofas into the bedroom.
That meant creating a bed system that customers could personalize through its frame, headboard, storage, fabric and colour.
It also meant preserving the everyday advantages that matter to us: convenient delivery, manageable assembly, washable upholstery and access to replacement components.
Underneath those choices, Ara has a four-quadrant steel structural foundation supported by legs and laminated veneer lumber slats.
Its weight capacities are specified for each size.
And its modular construction makes the bed easier to move and assemble in components.
We don't believe durability should be reduced to an unsupported promise that a bed will never squeak or will last a predetermined number of decades.
Instead, customers deserve clear information about construction, compatibility, maintenance and repairability.
Our goal with Ara was to create a bed that is sturdy enough for everyday life, customizable enough to feel personal and practical enough to grow with the way people live.
That's what we believe makes Ara more than just a bed.
