What Table Finishes Go With a Light-Coloured Sofa?

A finish-by-finish guide to the oak, walnut, black wood and steel finishes on our tables, and which of our light sofa colours each one suits.

A wood coffee table in front of a light sofa

Short answer: Oak and walnut both work with a light-coloured sofa, and the choice sets the mood. Oak keeps the room airy and low in contrast, walnut adds depth so a pale sofa does not blend into the room, and black wood or a steel accent adds a sharper contrast. Whichever you pick, repeat one wood across the coffee table, side table and chair legs so the room looks planned.

A light sofa is a quiet backdrop, so the table sets the tone. Below we go through each finish on our site, how to match wood tones and how to mix woods and metals. For the whole palette, see our neutral palette guide.

Which table finishes work with a light-coloured sofa?

Four finishes cover our tables: oak, walnut, black wood and steel colours. Our wood tables are made of ash veneer or ash wood in an oak or walnut finish, so ash is the material, not a separate finish.

Which table finishes work with a light-coloured sofa?

FinishWhere we offer itNext to a light sofa
OakTessella, Eclipse, Arca, Ombra, Mensa and StellaThe lighter wood: keeps the room airy and low in contrast
WalnutThe same six tablesThe warmer, deeper wood: gives a pale sofa something to stand out against
Black woodMensa coffee and side tables onlyThe strongest contrast, with a graphic look
Steel coloursSolis side tableOne small accent in a colour such as Wave, Dandelion, Thyme, Mushroom or Solstice

Finishes can change, so check the product page before you order.

Dove is a paler finish that we offer on storage rather than tables: the Altitude storage cabinet, Themis and the Aurora credenza. If your media wall is Dove, a wood coffee table adds warmth in front of it.

Oak or walnut with a cream sofa?

Either works, so choose by what you want the table to do. Oak is the lighter wood and keeps a cream or off-white sofa calm and bright. Walnut is the deeper wood, and it makes a pale sofa the centre of the room. As general advice, check your floor first: a table close to the floor tone can disappear.

The table pairs our light sofa colours with a finish to try first. These are design suggestions, not statements about fabric undertones, so compare a free fabric swatch with the wood photos on the product page.

How do I match wood tones?

Pick one lead wood and repeat it. These rules are general design advice.

  • Repeat one wood on three pieces: the coffee table, a side table and the chair legs. Our Vela comes in oak or walnut, and each fabric on the Naos is paired with one wood on its page, such as Parchment & Oak or Mocha & Walnut.
  • Carry it into storage: Altitude, Themis and Aurora also come in oak and walnut, so a media wall can match the table.
  • Compare materials, not only names: Tessella, Eclipse, Arca, Mensa and Ombra are ash veneer or ash wood, while the Stella is MDF with a melamine finish. Put the product photos side by side before you combine them.
  • Use two woods at most: if you mix oak and walnut, make the difference obvious and keep the second wood to one small piece, rather than two tones that almost match.

Our coffee table guide covers size and height, and our guide to pairing a sofa, chair and coffee table shows the same finish idea across a whole group.

Can I mix woods and metals?

Yes, and the simplest rule is to repeat every accent at least twice. Black appears on our Mensa in black wood and on the black powder-coated steel frame of the Mira chair, which has walnut-coloured ash arms. The Solis comes in several steel colours: use one as a single accent rather than a theme. Our side table guide compares the tables beside the sofa.

Our recommendation

  • Airy and calm: Snowdrift, Sesame or Parchment with an oak Eclipse or Tessella.
  • Warm and deeper: Silken Sand, Flax Haven or Sunset Beige with a walnut Tessella or Mensa.
  • Graphic: Snowdrift or Sesame with a Mensa in black wood, and a Mira chair to repeat the black.
  • A touch of colour: an oak or walnut coffee table with a Solis in one steel colour beside the sofa.
  • Not sure: order free fabric swatches, then compare them with the wood photos on the product page and your floor in daylight. Our sofa colour guide helps you choose the shade itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Oak and walnut both work. Oak keeps a pale sofa airy and low in contrast, walnut adds depth so the sofa stands out, and black wood gives a graphic contrast. On our site, the Tessella, Eclipse, Arca, Ombra, Mensa and Stella come in oak and walnut, and the Mensa also comes in black wood. Choose one wood and repeat it on the side table and chair legs, and check the finish on the product page before ordering.

Choose oak if you want the room calm and bright, and walnut if you want the sofa to stand out against a deeper tone. Both suit a cream or off-white sofa, so the deciding factor is your floor and your light. As general advice, a table that is close to the floor colour can disappear, while a clear step lighter or darker looks planned. Warm light colours such as Silken Sand, Flax Haven and Sunset Beige pair easily with walnut, and Snowdrift, Sesame and Parchment pair easily with oak.

Pick one lead wood and repeat it on at least three pieces, such as the coffee table, a side table and the chair legs. Our Vela comes in oak or walnut, and each Naos fabric is paired with one wood on its page, so choose the fabric with your table in mind. If you mix woods, use two at most and make the difference obvious instead of nearly matching. The Stella is MDF with a melamine finish, so compare product photos before combining it with the ash tables.

Yes, it gives the strongest contrast of our finishes, and it suits a pale sofa such as Snowdrift or Sesame. Our Mensa coffee table and side table come in black wood, and the Mira chair has a black powder-coated steel frame, so you can repeat the black once or twice to make it look deliberate. As general advice, darker finishes show dust sooner, so plan for a quick wipe. Oak and walnut give less contrast.

Yes, with limits. Use no more than two woods, let one lead, and keep the second to a single small piece such as a side table or a chair, so it looks chosen rather than accidental. Two tones that almost match tend to look like a mistake, which is general design advice. Our Tessella, Eclipse, Arca, Ombra, Mensa and Stella tables all come in both finishes. Compare the two finishes on the product pages before you order, and check them against your floor in daylight.

Not among our tables. They come in oak, walnut, black wood on the Mensa, or steel colours on the Solis. Dove, a paler finish, is offered on our Altitude storage cabinet, Themis shelves and cabinets, and the Aurora credenza, so a Dove media wall can sit behind a wood coffee table. If you want a lighter look, choose oak. The tables in this guide are wood, melamine or steel, and none is marble, stone or glass. Check the product page for the current finishes.
