A rug can make a room feel complete. But choosing the right size isn't always obvious.
A rug that's too small can make furniture look disconnected. One that's too large can overwhelm the room or leave you with very little visible flooring.
And when you're choosing a washable rug, there's another consideration: how you'll clean it once it's in your home.
We want choosing a rug to feel simple, so we've put together a practical guide to finding the right size for your living room, bedroom, dining room, hallway, or smaller space.

Start with your furniture, not just the floor
One of the easiest mistakes to make when choosing a rug is measuring only the open floor space.
Instead, start with the furniture the rug will sit beneath or around.
In a living room, look at the footprint of your sofa, coffee table, and accent chairs.
In a bedroom, consider the size of your bed and how much rug you'd like visible along the sides.
In a dining room, think about the table and the chairs when they're pulled out.
The rug should create a relationship between the furniture pieces rather than feeling like a separate object placed in the middle.
We recommend using painter's tape to outline a few rug sizes on your floor before deciding.
It's a surprisingly effective way to see how much of the room a rug will occupy.
You can also move the furniture around the taped outline to understand how everything will fit.
The five Cozey washable rug sizes
Our washable rugs come in five sizes, with each design available across the range, subject to stock.
The five Cozey washable rug sizes
| Size | Where we'd consider it |
|---|---|
| 2.5' × 8' runner | Hallways, entryways, galley kitchens |
| 3' × 5' | Small accents, compact entryways, bedside spaces |
| 5' × 8' | Small living rooms, bedrooms, reading areas |
| 8' × 10' | Living rooms, larger bedrooms, dining rooms |
| 9' × 12' | Spacious living areas, large bedrooms, open layouts |
Every Cozey washable rug includes a cushioned, non-slip modular pad sized for that rug.
The right choice will depend on your room dimensions and furniture layout, but these are useful starting points.
Living room: Make the furniture feel connected
Living rooms are one of the places where rug size makes the biggest visual difference.
A rug can help define the seating area, especially when your living room shares space with a dining area or kitchen.
We generally recommend choosing a rug large enough to sit beneath at least the front legs of the main seating pieces, when the room allows.
This helps the sofa and chairs feel connected.
Small living rooms: Consider 5' × 8'
A 5' × 8' rug can work well in a compact living room or apartment.
It may sit beneath the coffee table and extend toward the sofa, creating a defined area without covering too much of the floor.
If space permits, try positioning the front legs of the sofa on the rug.
However, don't force that arrangement if the proportions don't work.
A small rug can also function as a distinct accent, especially in a reading corner or beside a lounge chair.
Medium living rooms: Consider 8' × 10'
For many living-room layouts, an 8' × 10' rug creates a more substantial foundation.
It can help connect a sofa, coffee table, and additional seating while leaving some of the surrounding floor visible.
We particularly like this approach when the living room has a sectional or multiple seating pieces.
The goal is to make the rug feel integrated with the furniture, rather than floating beneath the coffee table on its own.
Large living rooms: Consider 9' × 12'
In a spacious room, a 9' × 12' rug can create a generous, cohesive seating area.
It's a useful option when you have a larger sectional, multiple chairs, or an open-concept layout where the rug helps distinguish the living area from the rest of the space.
You may be able to place all the seating furniture fully on the rug, depending on the arrangement.
Before deciding, measure the outer edges of your furniture grouping rather than relying on the sofa's dimensions alone.
A large rug can make a room feel beautifully grounded, but it should still leave enough space for comfortable circulation.
Bedroom: Think about where your feet land
In a bedroom, a rug adds softness and warmth.
We like placing a rug so that there's comfortable fabric underfoot when you get out of bed.
You don't necessarily need the rug to extend beneath the entire bed. In many rooms, positioning it under the lower portion of the bed creates a beautiful result while leaving the nightstands directly on the floor.
For smaller bedrooms
A 5' × 8' rug may work well beneath part of a bed or alongside it, depending on the layout.
If the room is especially compact, a 3' × 5' rug can also be used as a smaller bedside accent.
The important question is how much fabric you'll actually see once the bed is in place.
If most of the rug disappears underneath the furniture, a larger size or different placement may work better.
For queen beds
An 8' × 10' rug is often a useful starting point for a queen-size bed.
Depending on the room, it can extend beyond the sides and foot of the bed, creating a generous, balanced look.
We'd recommend checking the width of your bed frame and where you plan to position the rug.
A rug placed too far toward the headboard might be mostly hidden, while one positioned farther down can leave more visible fabric.
For king beds
A 9' × 12' rug can work beautifully beneath a king-size bed in a larger bedroom.
It offers more room for the rug to extend beyond the bed, although the ideal placement depends on your nightstands, bed frame, and surrounding floor space.
If your bedroom is narrower, you may prefer a smaller rug arrangement rather than trying to cover too much of the floor.
The aim is a comfortable and balanced room, not following a rigid decorating rule.
Dining room: Leave space for the chairs
For dining rooms, we'd usually recommend choosing a rug based on the table and chair arrangement.
The most important detail is what happens when someone pulls a chair back to sit down.
If the rug is too small, the chair's back legs may come off the rug, creating an uneven surface when someone moves.
A useful guideline is to allow approximately 24–30 inches of rug beyond the edges of the dining table where chairs are used.
That's a starting point, not a rule that works in every room.
For a smaller table, an 8' × 10' rug may provide enough space.
For a larger dining arrangement, a 9' × 12' rug might be more appropriate.
Check the complete width and length of the table, then add the clearance needed for chairs on each side.
We also like lower-profile rugs in dining areas because chairs can move more easily across them.
Cozey's washable chenille surface and cushioned pad create a comfortable, relatively low-profile system that works well in everyday dining spaces.
And because the rug layer is removable, cleaning up after meals is more manageable.
Hallways and kitchens: A runner can make all the difference
Long, narrow spaces are often overlooked when decorating.
But a runner can add warmth, comfort, and personality without changing the function of the room.
Our 2.5' × 8' washable rug runner is designed for spaces such as hallways, entryways, and galley kitchens.
Before choosing one, measure the width of the area.
Ideally, the runner should leave some visible flooring on both sides rather than extending directly to the walls or cabinetry.
You should also check door clearance.
A rug that looks great in an empty hallway won't be practical if a nearby door catches on it.
In a kitchen, think about where you spend the most time standing.
You might position a runner along the main work area or in front of the counter, depending on the layout.
We like adding the softness of chenille and a cushioned pad to spaces that otherwise have hard flooring.
Just remember to keep the rug away from situations where it would create an obstruction or interfere with doors and appliances.
Entryways and small spaces
Sometimes, you don't need a large area rug at all.
A 3' × 5' washable rug can bring colour and softness to an entryway, a small sitting area, or a compact bedroom.
It can also create a visual transition between spaces.
For example, a rug near the entry can make the area feel more welcoming, while a small rug beneath a chair and side table can turn an unused corner into a reading spot.
In these spaces, the right size often depends on maintaining a clear walking path.
We'd always measure where people will move through the room before deciding.
A rug should make a space feel more inviting, not more crowded.
Open-concept rooms: Use rugs to define different areas
Open layouts can be beautiful, but they sometimes need a little help creating a sense of structure.
Rugs are one of our favourite ways to do that.
A large rug beneath a sofa and coffee table helps define the living area, while a separate rug under the dining table can establish a second zone.
You don't need to use matching patterns.
In fact, mixing two complementary rugs can make the space more interesting.
Try choosing designs with a shared colour family or similar overall mood.
One rug might have a stronger pattern, while the other is quieter.
The important thing is that the rugs feel connected without competing for attention.
Also consider the space between them.
Leaving visible flooring between two rugs can help each area feel intentional rather than crowded.
Don't forget how you'll wash the rug
Washability is part of the reason you may be choosing a Cozey rug, so it's worth considering the cleaning requirements before deciding on size.
Our 2.5' × 8' runners, 3' × 5', and 5' × 8' rugs can be washed in standard home washing machines.
The 8' × 10' requires a washer of at least 4.5 cu. ft., without a central agitator.
The 9' × 12' requires a commercial 60–80 lb washer.
For some customers, that's an important consideration.
You might love a 9' × 12' rug in your living room, but if easy home washing is a top priority, you'll want to plan for how you'll clean it.
We wouldn't recommend choosing a rug that's too small just because it's easier to wash. The rug still needs to work visually and practically in the room.
It's simply another detail to consider as part of your decision.
Choosing the right colour and pattern
Once you've settled on a size, the fun part begins.
A rug can introduce a little contrast, soften the look of your furniture, or tie several colours together.
For a calm, cohesive room, you might choose a pattern with subtle tonal variation.
For a more expressive look, consider a design with stronger colours or a more distinctive motif.
And if your furniture is quite minimal, a traditional-inspired rug can introduce beautiful visual detail without adding more furniture or accessories.
Because lighting affects the way rug colours appear, we recommend reviewing the lighting visualizations on our product pages.
They help show how a design can look in different conditions, although the final appearance will still depend on the lighting in your home.
Every Cozey rug pattern is exclusive to our collection and available in the same five sizes, subject to stock.
You can focus on finding the combination of design and dimensions that suits your space.
One final tip: Measure twice, then trust your eye
There are plenty of guidelines for choosing rug sizes, but every home is different.
Before ordering, measure your room, mark the proposed rug dimensions on the floor, and consider how the furniture will sit around it.
Look at the arrangement from different angles.
Does the rug make the seating area feel connected? Is there enough space for chairs to move? Does it soften the room without taking over?
Those are the questions that matter most.
A well-chosen rug shouldn't feel like an afterthought. It should help the whole room come together.
