What determines the price of a washable rug?
Size is one of the biggest factors. A small accent rug uses considerably less material than a large area rug. But dimensions are only part of the story. The fabric, stitching, printing, cushioning, and backing all influence how the finished rug looks and feels.
A thin washable rug might have an appealing initial price. But if you're planning to place it over hardwood, laminate, or tile, you may also want cushioning and something to help keep it in place. That's why we recommend looking at the complete rug system rather than only the fabric surface. At Cozey, we've chosen a two-piece construction that combines a removable washable rug layer with a separate cushioned pad.
The result is a soft, comfortable rug that's easy to clean without having to wash the entire system.
Why we include the cushioned pad
A pad might not be the first thing you notice when choosing a rug, but it makes a real difference once the rug is in your home. Our washable chenille layer is approximately 8.5 mm thick. Underneath, the included modular pad adds another 4.5 mm of cushioning, for a combined thickness of approximately 13 mm. The pad has an EVA cushioning core and grippy TPR material on both sides.
That helps it stay positioned against the floor while also helping the washable rug layer remain in place above it. Reinforced corners provide additional stability. We like this construction because it combines soft comfort with a relatively low-profile appearance. The pad comes in interlocking pieces that fit together like a puzzle. Assembly doesn't require tools, adhesives, or Velcro.
You simply assemble the pad and lay the rug over it. And because the pad is included in every listed price, you know the cost of the complete system before ordering.
How much does it cost to clean a washable rug?
One of the benefits of a washable rug is being able to clean the fabric yourself. But the size of your washing machine matters. For Cozey washable rugs:
- 3' × 5', 5' × 8', and 2.5' × 8' runners: Suitable for standard home washing machines.
- 8' × 10': Requires a large washer with at least 4.5 cubic feet of capacity and no central agitator.
- 9' × 12': Requires a commercial washer rated for 60–80 lb loads.
If you live in a condo with compact in-suite laundry, we'd check the washer capacity before choosing an 8' × 10' rug. And if you're considering our largest size, plan for access to a commercial laundry. The removable rug layer should be washed on a gentle cycle with cold water and mild, bleach-free detergent. It can be tumble-dried on low heat or air-dried. The cushioned pad is spot-clean only.
We think these details are important to the overall value of a rug. A beautiful product should fit your cleaning routine as well as your living room.
Does a more expensive rug always mean better quality?
Not necessarily. Rather than judging quality by price alone, we'd look at the construction and the evidence behind it. At Cozey, we've improved our polyester chenille fabric to create a richer texture and reduce colour fading after washing. We've also upgraded the edge stitching to make it more resistant to repeated washing.
Our latest construction has undergone 15 washing cycles in testing, with only minor fading and good edge and corner flatness observed. That testing was designed to simulate annual washing over 15 years. It isn't a guarantee that a rug will last 15 years, but it gives us useful information about how the fabric and stitching respond to repeated cleaning.
Every rug and modular pad is also individually inspected throughout manufacturing and before shipping. Products that don't meet our quality standards are rejected. We think these are more meaningful indicators of quality than an expensive price tag.

Each design is even named after a Cozey employee, giving the collection a personal connection to the people behind our brand. We use digital printing on soft polyester chenille to create detailed patterns with visual depth, from traditional-inspired designs to more contemporary styles.
We've also enhanced the texture of the chenille itself, making the fabric look and feel more elevated.
