When you're shopping for a rug, it's easy to focus on the design. The colours, the pattern, how it might look under your sofa.
But what you don't see in a product photograph matters just as much.
The fabric, stitching, cushioning, and way the different pieces work together all influence how a rug feels and holds up in everyday life.
At Cozey, we've put a lot of thought into those details. Our washable rugs combine a soft chenille surface with a separate cushioned, non-slip modular pad. We've also improved the materials and construction over time, with a particular focus on washing performance, colour retention, and texture.
Here's a closer look at what goes into a Cozey washable rug—and why we made these choices.

The rug layer: Soft polyester chenille
The part you see and touch is made from polyester chenille, with a polyester backing.
We chose chenille for its soft feel and the way it works with our rug designs. It brings warmth and texture to a room without requiring a thick, high pile.
The rug layer measures approximately 8.5 mm in thickness.
It's designed to feel comfortable underfoot while remaining practical to remove, fold, and wash when needed.
Our chenille also has a relatively tight construction. In everyday use, we've found that it holds up well to foot traffic and normal activity around the home, without noticeable pilling or shedding issues.
That doesn't mean the fabric is indestructible. A sharp object or a pet's claw can still catch an occasional thread. But the construction is intended to balance softness with practicality.
We've continued refining the fabric since launching the collection.
One improvement was enhancing the physical texture, giving the chenille a richer and more elevated appearance. Another was improving colour retention, so the patterns experience less fading through repeated washing.
Those might sound like small changes, but they're the kinds of details that make a difference over time.
How the designs are created
Every Cozey washable rug features an exclusive pattern developed by our in-house design team.
We digitally print those patterns onto the chenille fabric.
This lets us create detailed, layered-looking designs with the character of traditional-inspired rugs, alongside more contemporary styles.
The important distinction is that the patterns create visual texture. The raised or faded-looking details you might see in an image are part of the print, rather than different woven pile heights.
The actual fabric texture stays consistent across the collection.
This allows us to offer a wide variety of designs while maintaining the same construction and feel underfoot.
If you're choosing between two Cozey patterns, you can focus on which one suits your space. You're not choosing between different levels of softness or cushioning.
Underneath: A cushioned modular pad
The second part of our rug system is the pad underneath.
We didn't want our washable rugs to feel like a thin piece of fabric placed directly on the floor.
We also wanted customers to be able to wash the rug layer without dealing with a large, bulky backing.
Our solution is a separate modular pad that comes included with every rug.
The pad has an EVA cushioning core and TPR grip material on both sides.
EVA provides soft cushioning. TPR helps the system grip the floor underneath and the fabric layer above.
The pad itself is approximately 4.5 mm thick.
Together with the 8.5 mm rug layer, the complete system measures approximately 13 mm.
That gives you a comfortable feel underfoot while maintaining a relatively low-profile appearance.
It's a balance we particularly like for everyday living rooms, bedrooms, and spaces where people walk barefoot.
Why the pad comes in puzzle-like pieces
Rather than shipping one large, rigid pad, we designed ours as a set of interlocking pieces.
Think of a simple puzzle: the pieces fit together to form one cushioned surface.
This makes the pad easier to pack, ship, assemble, and move.
Every rug arrives in one box containing both the washable rug layer and all the pad pieces needed for its size.
Assembly doesn't require tools, adhesives, or special equipment. One person can put the system together, including larger rug sizes.
Once assembled, the pieces stay connected during normal daily use, including walking, vacuuming, and moving furniture.
And if you move homes or need to store the rug, you can separate the pad pieces and reinstall them later.
We like practical details that make furniture and home accessories easier to live with. The modular pad follows that same thinking.
How the rug stays flat and in place
There are two parts to how our rugs stay positioned.
First, the modular pad has TPR grip material on both sides. The bottom provides friction against the floor, while the top helps the washable rug layer stay in position.
Second, the washable rug layer has reinforced TPR corners that help it remain flat.
The rug rests on the pad through friction. There are no Velcro strips, clips, or mechanical attachments.
That also makes removing the washable layer straightforward. You lift it off rather than detaching multiple fastening points.
The pad is slightly smaller than the rug itself, so the chenille fabric extends past the pad's perimeter and hides it from view.
It's a simple-looking system, but several material and construction choices work together to create that result.
Our non-slip performance is supported by the materials, design, internal use, and customer feedback. We haven't established a formal laboratory slip-resistance rating, so we don't describe the rug as completely slip-proof.
Stronger stitching for repeated washing
One area we've specifically improved is the stitching along the sides of the rug.
Machine washing puts fabric and seams through movement and agitation. Over time, those stresses can affect how a rug's edges look and feel.
We've changed our edge stitching to make it more resistant to repeated washing.
This complements the improvements to our chenille fabric, including better colour retention.
The goal isn't to make a rug that never changes. Most textiles experience some degree of wear, and improper care can still cause damage.
Our goal is to make the construction more resilient under the care conditions we recommend.
And because these improvements are now included across every design and size we sell, customers receive the same updated construction throughout the collection.
What our 15-cycle wash testing tells us
We've tested our latest washable rug construction through 15 washing cycles.
The test was designed to simulate washing a rug once a year over 15 years. It's a way to evaluate how the rug responds to repeated washing—not a claim that every rug will last 15 years.
After testing, we observed only minor colour fading, good edge and corner flatness, and some possible shrinkage.
Those results are encouraging, particularly because we've focused our improvements on fabric colour retention and stitching.
But they also help us set realistic expectations.
The chenille layer can experience some shrinkage. Following the care instructions is important so that the rug continues to fit properly over its pad.
We haven't confirmed whether every wash cycle in this test included low-heat tumble drying, so we keep the test findings separate from our drying recommendations.
And we don't treat wash testing as proof of resistance to every kind of wear. Sunlight, sharp objects, different flooring conditions, and daily use create different stresses.
We think sharing what we've actually tested is more useful than making broad claims about durability.
Individual inspections throughout manufacturing
Construction quality depends on more than the materials listed on a product page.
It also depends on whether each finished product meets the intended specifications.
Our rugs are manufactured in China, working from our Cozey product designs and requirements.
Every rug and pad is individually inspected during manufacturing and at the final quality-control stage.
The checks include fabric quality, printing and colour consistency, dimensions, edge stitching, corner reinforcement, and the pad itself.
If a rug or pad doesn't meet our standards, it's rejected rather than approved for shipment.
We consider this especially important because small inconsistencies can affect the finished experience. Uneven stitching, incorrect dimensions, or colour differences matter when a product takes up so much visual space in a room.
The objective is to maintain consistent construction across designs and sizes.
What about fabric certification?
The washable chenille rug layer is OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100 certified, which means the textile has been tested for harmful substances according to the certification's requirements.
The certification applies to the washable rug layer, not the modular pad.
Our rug layer also uses a PFAS-free, C0 stain-resistant treatment that helps fresh liquid spills bead on the fabric surface.
That treatment makes everyday cleanup easier, although its effectiveness can gradually decrease after repeated washing.
We think these distinctions are worth explaining. Certification, stain resistance, washability, and comfort are different product characteristics. Each should be described accurately.
Why we're able to offer this construction at an accessible price
Cozey designs more than rugs.
Because we're a broader home-furnishings company, we can spread our fixed operating costs across a much larger assortment of products.
That helps us offer thoughtfully designed rugs at accessible prices while including the cushioned, non-slip pad in the complete system.
We don't think customers should need to make an extra purchase just to get the comfort and functionality a rug is designed to provide.
To us, a good-value product is one where the construction, design, everyday experience, and price all make sense together.
Quality is the sum of the details
A rug is something you use every day, often without thinking about it.
You walk across it, move furniture over it, vacuum it, and occasionally clean up a spill.
That's why we're attentive to the details behind the finished appearance: soft chenille, reinforced stitching, a stable cushioned pad, secure interlocking pieces, and individual quality inspections.
We want you to notice how beautiful your rug looks and how comfortable it feels—not have to think about how it's constructed.
