Buying a rug online gives you access to designs you might never find in a local store. You can explore patterns, compare sizes, and imagine how everything will look in your home without spending an afternoon moving from shop to shop. But a rug is also one of those products that's difficult to judge from a photograph alone. Colour, texture, thickness, and scale all affect how it will look and feel once it's on your floor.
We believe buying a washable rug online should be straightforward, so we've put together a few things worth checking before you order.

Look at colour in more than one setting
One of the most common questions we hear about rugs is whether the colour will look the same in person as it does online. The short answer is that it can look different. The same rug can appear warmer in evening light, cooler near a north-facing window, or more muted beside dark flooring. Your phone and computer screens can also display colours differently.
That's why we recommend looking beyond the main product photograph. On our Cozey washable-rug product pages, we've included lighting visualizations that help show how the design appears under different conditions. We use Lightbeans visualization technology for these previews. It's especially useful when you're trying to coordinate a rug with an existing sofa, wood floor, or paint colour.
We don't currently offer physical rug swatches, so we'd recommend taking time to review the different lighting views and lifestyle images before ordering. If a colour looks very different depending on the lighting, consider which of those conditions most closely resembles your home.
The goal isn't to find a screen image that perfectly predicts every lighting situation. It's to understand the character of the design before it arrives.
Look closely at the texture, not just the pattern
Photographs can make a fabric appear more dimensional than it actually is. A rug with a traditional-looking pattern may seem to have a raised woven surface, even when that effect comes from the print. Our Cozey washable rugs use digitally printed designs on soft polyester chenille. We've enhanced the chenille texture to create a richer appearance, but the physical surface is consistent across the different patterns.
That means a design with an aged, vintage-inspired appearance doesn't have different raised pile heights matching its printed details. We think it's worth understanding this before purchasing. The benefit is a soft, relatively low-profile surface that's practical for everyday use. Underneath, every rug includes a cushioned modular pad, creating approximately 13 mm of combined thickness.
If you're comparing product photographs, look for material close-ups and construction information rather than relying only on styled room images. Those details give you a better idea of how the rug will actually feel.
Check the size against your furniture
Rugs often look larger in photographs because the room and furniture have been arranged around them. Before buying, measure your space. For a living room, think about the relationship between the sofa, coffee table, and any additional seating. For a bedroom, consider how much of the rug you want visible along the sides and foot of the bed.
For a dining room, remember that chairs need space to move away from the table. Our washable rugs are available in five sizes: 2.5' × 8' runners, 3' × 5', 5' × 8', 8' × 10', and 9' × 12'. The easiest way to understand the scale is to mark the intended rug dimensions on your floor with painter's tape. Then walk around the room and check whether you have enough clearance for doors, furniture, and everyday movement.
It's a simple exercise that can save a lot of second-guessing.
Understand exactly what's included
When shopping for a washable rug online, don't assume the photograph shows everything included in the price. You may need a pad to achieve the same comfort and appearance. Every Cozey washable rug includes a cushioned, non-slip modular pad sized for the rug. The system arrives together in one box.
The pad is made from interlocking puzzle-like pieces. Once assembled, you simply place the removable rug layer on top. The pad's TPR material provides grip on both sides, and reinforced TPR corners help the rug layer stay flat. There's no Velcro, adhesive, or mechanical fastening required. We like making this clear because the complete product should match what customers expect to receive.
You shouldn't have to discover after delivery that an important part of the setup was missing from your purchase.
Check how you'll wash it
Washable doesn't mean every rug fits in every washing machine. This is especially important in Canadian condos, where in-suite laundry may have limited capacity. Our smaller rug sizes can be washed in standard home machines. The 8' × 10' requires a large washer of at least 4.5 cubic feet without a central agitator.
Our 9' × 12' needs a commercial 60–80 lb washer. The washable chenille layer can be tumble-dried on low heat or air-dried. The cushioned pad is spot-clean only. We recommend checking your laundry setup before purchasing, particularly if you expect to wash the rug frequently. If you have pets or young children, ease of cleaning may be an important part of the decision.
Knowing what the cleaning routine involves can make it easier to choose the right size.
What should Canadians know about delivery?
Cozey offers standard free shipping across Canada's ten provinces, with possible exceptions in remote areas. The estimated delivery date depends on your location and the availability of the rug you've selected. We recommend checking the delivery estimate on the product page and at checkout.
If you live in a condo or apartment building, standard couriers generally deliver to the building entrance or lobby rather than carrying the box to your unit. It's worth planning how you'll bring the box upstairs, particularly if you live alone. Our rugs arrive folded, with the modular pad packed in separate pieces. This makes the package more manageable than shipping a large rigid pad.
Because the rug is folded, you may notice some creases after unpacking. These generally relax over a few days, although some take one to two weeks. If needed, you can gently steam the fabric to help it settle.
What if the rug looks different in your home?
Sometimes a design simply looks different once it's surrounded by your own furniture and lighting. That's a normal part of buying home furnishings online. Before deciding whether a rug is right for you, assemble it in its intended space and look at it under the lighting you normally use. Try viewing it during the day and in the evening.
You may find that a colour which initially surprised you looks very different once the room is arranged around it. At Cozey, we offer a 30-day return period, subject to our return conditions. We strongly recommend keeping the original packaging until you're confident about your purchase, as it's important for returns.
The current details are available on our Canadian returns page.
What about quality and warranty?
Buying online shouldn't mean having to guess how a product was made. We think companies should explain their construction and quality standards clearly. Our rugs feature upgraded chenille fabric, improved edge stitching for better wash durability, and reinforced corners. The latest construction has been tested through 15 wash cycles, with minor fading and good edge and corner flatness observed.
Every rug and pad is individually inspected during production and before shipping. Cozey also offers a five-year limited warranty covering eligible manufacturing defects, subject to the warranty terms. That's separate from the return period and doesn't mean normal wear or every kind of accidental damage is covered. We believe those distinctions should be easy to understand before making a purchase.
A few things we'd confirm before clicking “Buy”
If we were ordering a washable rug online, we'd check that:
- The colour works with our room's lighting and existing furniture.
- The dimensions are right for the space.
- The rug includes its pad and any required components.
- The washing instructions work with the machines available to us.
- The delivery estimate and return conditions are clear.
Then we'd choose the design we love. A rug has an immediate effect on how a room feels. Buying one online should be an enjoyable part of making your home your own.
