How Does a Mattress in a Box Work?
Summary: The mattress is compressed, rolled and sealed in plastic at the factory so it fits in a single box about 44" long and 18" wide. Once you open it, it expands back to full size on its own.
Foam is mostly air, so it can be squeezed down without damage and recover once released. Hybrids work the same way: their pocket coils are individually wrapped in fabric, so they compress and spring back along with the foam layers. That's why both our Foam Mattress and our Hybrid ship in a single box, even in King size.
The benefits are practical:
- It fits anywhere. A rolled mattress goes through standard doorways, up narrow staircases and into elevators, which matters a lot in Canadian apartments and older homes.
- No delivery truck appointment. It ships by courier like any other large package.
- You can move it yourself. A rolled mattress is far easier to handle than a full-size one.

What to Expect From Delivery in Canada
Summary: Cozey mattresses ship free to all 10 provinces and usually arrive within 2 to 7 days when in stock. A courier leaves the box at your door or in your building's lobby, so you don't need to be home.
Timing
Our mattresses are in stock about 95% of the time, and in-stock orders usually arrive within 2 to 7 days. You'll get tracking and an "Out for Delivery" notice on the day. Deliveries happen on weekdays, excluding statutory holidays. If you're buying a bed frame at the same time, we can hold the mattress so everything arrives together.
Where the box is left
Standard delivery goes to the front door of a house or the lobby of an apartment or condo, and you don't need to be there to receive it. If the courier can't leave it safely, they'll try again the next business day.
If you'd rather have it brought to your unit on a specific date, scheduled delivery is available in select areas for a small additional fee. You'll see the option at checkout if it applies to your address. Couriers don't remove old mattresses, so plan for that separately. Many Canadian cities offer bulky item pickup.

The box is the same size whatever mattress size you order, and it has a handle for carrying. One person can manage a Full, but for a Queen or King, especially up stairs, two people make it much easier.
Tips for apartments and condos
- Check your building's delivery rules. Some condos require deliveries to be booked or picked up from a concierge.
- Unbox in the bedroom. Carry the box to the room first. Once it's open, the mattress is full size.
- Measure tight spots if you're unsure. At 44" long and under 19" wide, the box clears standard doorways and fits in a typical elevator.
How to Unbox and Set Up Your Mattress
Summary: Put your bed base in place, unroll the mattress on it, cut away the plastic and let it breathe. It's ready to sleep on in about 30 minutes and at full shape within 24 to 48 hours.
Before you open the box
Set up your bed frame first. Both Cozey mattresses work on a solid platform, a slatted base with gaps no wider than 3", a box spring or the floor. Queen and King sizes need center support. If the box was delivered on a cold day, bring it inside and give it time to reach room temperature before you open it. Our Serene® comfort foam isn't temperature sensitive, but everything expands more easily at room temperature.
Step by step
- Carry the box to the bedroom. It's much easier to move rolled than open.
- Open the box and slide out the rolled mattress. Place it at the foot of the bed.
- Unroll it on the base. Make sure it's facing the right way, with the quilted top up.
- Cut the plastic carefully. Use the bag cutter included in the box, not a knife, so you don't nick the cover.
- Slide the plastic off. The mattress will start expanding right away.
- Give it time. It's ready to sleep on after about 30 minutes and reaches its full shape and feel within 24 to 48 hours.
About the smell
New foam often has a light smell for the first day or two. It's harmless, and opening a window or running a fan helps it fade faster. All the foam in our mattresses is CertiPUR-US® certified for low VOC emissions.
The first few weeks
A new mattress can feel a little firmer at first while the foam settles and your body adjusts, especially if your old mattress was soft or sagging. Most people settle in within a few weeks, which is why a long trial matters. Give it time before you decide.
How Sleep Trials, Returns and Exchanges Work at Cozey
Summary: You have 100 nights. If it's not right, start a return from your Cozey account or by contacting our Customer Happiness team, and we'll book a free pickup. No minimum nights, no box needed, and your refund is processed within 3 to 7 business days of the mattress being received and inspected.
Returning your mattress
- Start the return. Log in to your Cozey account and choose the return option on your order, or contact our Customer Happiness team.
- Book your pickup. We'll schedule a pickup appointment with you. You don't need the original box or any packaging.
- Get your refund. Once the mattress is received and inspected, your refund is processed within 3 to 7 business days.
Whenever possible, we donate returned mattresses instead of sending them to landfill.
Exchanging instead of returning
Sometimes the problem isn't the mattress, it's the feel. If the Foam Mattress feels too still or warm, or the Hybrid feels too bouncy, you can exchange one for the other within your trial. Contact us and we'll set it up.
Trying before you buy
If you'd rather feel it first, Cozey stores carry samples of both mattresses so you can compare the layers, and most have one of the two on display. Which one varies by store, so check with your nearest location before you visit.
The warranty
After the trial, both mattresses are covered by a 15-year limited warranty against manufacturing defects, including visible, permanent indentations of 1" or more when used on proper support. Normal softening and changes in comfort preference aren't covered, which is standard across the industry.
