Upholstered vs. Wood Bed Frames: Which Ara Bed Is Right for You?

A practical comparison of design, materials, durability, maintenance, headboards and storage to help you choose the right bed for your bedroom.

A Family on a Cozey Bed

Should you choose an upholstered bed or a wood bed? For most customers, the answer comes down to the style they want in their bedroom and the type of material they prefer to live with.

Both can be excellent choices. Neither is automatically sturdier, more comfortable or longer-lasting simply because of its exterior material.

An upholstered bed creates a softer, fabric-covered appearance. A wood bed brings visible grain, natural-looking finishes and a more architectural character.

But appearance isn't the only consideration. Cleaning, headboard design, storage, customization and construction also affect the experience of owning a bed.

At Cozey, we developed two versions of our Ara Bed System because we believe customers should have meaningful choices.

Ara Upholstered was our first expression of this idea. It brought some of the advantages customers appreciate in Cozey sofas into the bedroom: interchangeable design components, familiar Cozey fabrics and removable, machine-washable upholstery.

We later introduced Ara Wood because we wanted to serve customers who prefer a more natural, timeless wood aesthetic, a different surface-maintenance experience and a different design language.

The goal wasn't to create a better version of Ara.

It was to give customers another way to personalize their bedroom.

Both collections share the same underlying approach to structural support, compact packaging and modular assembly.

The biggest decision is therefore not which one is inherently better.

It's which design you want to live with.

Here's how to compare them.

The comparison is intentionally about differences in design and everyday use.

Both are part of the Ara family, and both were developed around the same fundamental design principles.

Why Did Cozey Create Ara Wood When Ara Upholstered Already Existed?

When we introduced Ara Upholstered, we wanted to make the bed-buying experience more personal.

Customers could select the frame shape, headboard, storage option, fabric and colour they preferred.

We also wanted to bring the removable, washable upholstery and modular approach of our sofas into the bedroom.

However, we recognized that not every customer wants a fabric-covered bed.

Some people prefer the warmth and visual character of wood.

Others want a cleaner, more architectural look, with wood grain rather than textile texture.

And some customers simply prefer the maintenance experience of wiping a finished wood surface rather than removing fabric covers for washing.

We saw an opportunity to serve those preferences while preserving the advantages of the Ara platform.

A Different Aesthetic, Not a Different Quality Tier

Ara Wood wasn't developed because Ara Upholstered was missing structural strength.

Nor was it intended as the objectively more durable option.

We introduced it because design preference is personal.

Someone who loves a softly upholstered headboard might not be attracted to a wood design, regardless of its construction.

Another customer might strongly prefer visible wood grain, even if the upholstered version offers more fabric customization.

We wanted both people to be able to find an Ara that suited their bedroom.

That's why our recommendation begins with the question:

What do you want your bedroom to look and feel like?

What Makes an Upholstered Bed Different From a Wood Bed?

An upholstered bed has fabric-covered exterior components.

Depending on the design, the fabric sits over foam and a structural panel.

A wood bed uses visible wooden or wood-based surfaces as part of its exterior appearance.

These material choices create different visual and tactile experiences.

Upholstered Beds: Softness and Textile Texture

Upholstery adds softness to a bedroom's appearance.

Fabric can introduce texture, colour and a warmer, more relaxed visual character.

Curved upholstered edges can also make a bed appear more sculptural.

The headboard can be particularly important.

For customers who frequently sit upright to read or watch television, a padded upholstered headboard may provide a more comfortable surface to lean against than an unpadded wood headboard.

The level of comfort still depends on the headboard's shape, padding and the user's preferences.

Wood Beds: Grain and Architectural Detail

Wood creates a different atmosphere.

Visible grain and stained finishes give a bed a more natural-looking appearance.

Fluted details can introduce rhythm and depth, while smoother wood panels create a cleaner silhouette.

A wood frame can suit minimalist, contemporary, Scandinavian-inspired or more traditional bedrooms, depending on the design and surrounding furniture.

But a wood bed isn't automatically more timeless than an upholstered bed.

Both can remain visually relevant for years.

The important question is which design you personally prefer.

Is Ara Wood Made From Solid Wood?

This is an important distinction when comparing wood bed frames.

Ara Wood is not made entirely from solid oak or solid walnut.

Its wood components use engineered panels with ash wood veneer.

Selected Fluted designs also include solid ash trim and solid ash fluted elements.

Oak and Walnut describe the available finish colours.

What Is Wood Veneer?

Wood veneer is a layer of real wood applied to a supporting substrate.

In Ara Wood, the underlying panel material is medium-density fibreboard, commonly called MDF.

The ash veneer provides the natural wood surface and grain appearance.

The panel's engineered core provides its underlying shape and dimensional structure.

What Parts of Ara Wood Use Solid Wood?

In the Fluted collection, selected decorative trim and fluted elements are made from solid ash.

The remaining larger panels use the specified veneered engineered-wood construction.

This allows us to create the detailed wood appearance while retaining the Ara modular design.

Is Veneer Inferior to Solid Wood?

Not automatically.

Solid wood and wood veneer have different characteristics.

Solid wood is made from solid timber throughout the relevant component.

Wood veneer combines a natural wood surface with a supporting substrate.

Solid wood can offer certain refinishing possibilities, depending on its construction and finish.

Veneered panels can provide a consistent finished appearance but require appropriate care because the wood surface layer is not infinitely thick.

Neither construction method, by itself, tells you whether a finished bed is well engineered.

For Ara, it's also important to remember that the exterior wood panels aren't the primary steel structural foundation supporting the mattress.

We prefer to explain the exact materials rather than use vague descriptions such as “solid wood look” that might confuse customers.

Which Is Sturdier: Ara Wood or Ara Upholstered?

Neither has an inherent structural advantage over the other.

Both Ara collections share the same underlying steel-frame approach.

The main foundation consists of four connecting steel quadrants, supporting legs and laminated veneer lumber slats.

The exterior design changes, but the fundamental mattress-support system remains similar.

Ara's Published Weight Limits

Ara Bed maximum total load by bed size

Bed sizeMaximum total load
Full / Double600 lb (272 kg)
Queen800 lb (363 kg)
King900 lb (408 kg)

These limits include the mattress and occupants.

They shouldn't be interpreted as per-person weight limits.

Does Wood Last Longer Than Fabric?

A bed's structural lifespan isn't determined by its visible upholstery or wood finish alone.

The steel foundation, supporting connections, assembly and maintenance all play important roles.

The exterior materials do have different kinds of wear.

Upholstery can stain, pill, snag or fade.

Finished wood can scratch, dent or be affected by moisture.

We wouldn't claim that Ara Wood will automatically last longer than Ara Upholstered, or vice versa.

The relevant difference is how you want the exterior to look and what type of care you're comfortable providing.

Which Is Easier to Clean: Upholstered or Wood Bed Frames?

This is one of the more practical differences between the collections.

Cleaning Ara Upholstered

Ara Upholstered uses removable, machine-washable covers on its supported fabric components.

This brings one of our most important sofa features into the bedroom.

If the fabric requires cleaning, eligible covers can be removed and washed according to their care instructions.

Customers can also vacuum upholstery to remove dust, hair and surface debris.

For households with pets or children, being able to remove and wash fabric is a meaningful advantage.

However, cleaning requires removing, laundering, drying and reinstalling the covers.

That takes more effort than quickly wiping a hard surface.

The fabric also isn't immune to permanent damage or stains merely because it's washable.

Cleaning Ara Wood

Ara Wood's finished surfaces can generally be maintained by dusting and wiping with an appropriate soft cloth.

This may be convenient for routine cleaning.

Unlike upholstery, there's no fabric cover to remove and wash.

However, the wood veneer and finish need to be protected from standing water, excessive moisture, harsh cleaning products and abrasive treatment.

Wood can also be scratched or dented.

Customers should follow the care instructions for the finish rather than assume it can be treated like a waterproof surface.

Our Cleaning Recommendation

If your priority is washable textile upholstery, choose Ara Upholstered.

If your priority is simple routine dusting and wiping, Ara Wood may suit your preferences better.

Neither is maintenance-free.

Which Bed Is Better for Pets?

For households with pets, both options have potential advantages and disadvantages.

Ara Upholstered With Pets

Fabric can feel softer against people and pets.

The removable covers are useful when cleaning everyday marks or accumulated hair.

Customers can choose fabrics based on their preferred texture and maintenance requirements.

However, fur may cling to fabric, and claws can snag certain textile surfaces.

Not every fabric is equally suitable for every pet.

If your cat scratches upholstery or your dog frequently jumps against furniture, consider fabric texture and snagging risk before selecting a colour.

Ara Wood With Pets

A finished wood surface may be quicker to wipe free of dust or loose fur.

There is no fabric for claws to snag.

However, nails can scratch the finish, and impacts can leave visible marks.

Wood should also be protected from moisture.

Which Ara Would We Choose for Pets?

We wouldn't make a blanket recommendation that all pet owners should buy one over the other.

Instead, consider your pet's behaviour.

For a pet that sheds heavily but rarely scratches furniture, either option may be practical.

For a household that values washing covers regularly, Ara Upholstered may be attractive.

For someone who wants fewer fabric surfaces, Ara Wood may be preferable.

The best choice depends on your pet and your cleaning habits.

Which Bed Is Better for Families With Children?

Again, the best answer depends on how the bed will be used.

Why Families Might Prefer Upholstery

The padded, fabric-covered exterior can create a softer contact surface than a rigid wood panel.

Removable covers can also be helpful when fabric needs cleaning.

However, upholstered furniture can still be damaged, and its corners and underlying structure aren't designed as protective safety equipment.

Why Families Might Prefer Wood

Finished wood panels may be convenient for wiping away certain surface marks.

A family that prefers hard surfaces over upholstery might find them easier to maintain during routine cleaning.

However, wood can still scratch, dent or be damaged by spills.

Storage Safety Matters Regardless of Material

Ara's storage configurations use four drawers.

Children should never climb inside them or use them as steps.

Each drawer has a specified maximum load of 20 lb (9 kg).

Parents should supervise children around moving furniture parts, regardless of the bed's exterior material.

How Do the Headboard Options Compare?

The headboard is one of the most important elements in a bedroom's overall appearance.

It can change how large the bed looks, how it relates to nearby furniture and how comfortable it feels when sitting upright.

Ara Upholstered Headboards

Customers can choose from:

  • Round: A soft, curved silhouette.
  • Square: A more structured, geometric appearance.
  • Pillow: A padded design that emphasizes a relaxed, upholstered look.
  • Extended: A wider, statement-making headboard that can anchor the design of the room.

These can be paired with compatible Round or Square upholstered frames in the same bed size.

That flexibility is an important part of Ara's customization.

Ara Wood Headboards

Ara Wood offers:

  • Round: A softer wood silhouette with curved forms.
  • Fluted: A more architectural headboard with repeating vertical detailing.

The headboards can be paired with compatible Wood frame options in the same size.

Which Headboard Is More Comfortable?

A padded upholstered headboard will generally feel softer to lean against than an unpadded wood panel.

Customers who regularly sit in bed to read or watch television may prefer upholstery for that reason.

Others may love the appearance of a wood headboard and simply use pillows for additional support.

Neither choice is wrong.

It's a matter of how you use the bed and how you want it to look.

Can You Customize the Bed Frame Independently From the Headboard?

Yes, within each collection's supported configurations.

We wanted Ara to give customers more meaningful choices than a conventional bed sold as one fixed design.

Ara Upholstered Frame and Headboard Options

Customers can choose a Round or Square frame.

They can then select a compatible Round, Square, Pillow or Extended headboard.

They can also choose storage or non-storage and select the fabric and colour available for that configuration.

Ara Wood Frame and Headboard Options

Customers can select between Fluted and raised Leg-frame designs, subject to the selected storage option.

Compatible Round and Fluted wood headboards allow further personalization.

They can also choose between Oak and Walnut finishes.

Can You Mix Wood and Upholstered Components?

Customers should select components within the currently supported configurations for their chosen collection.

Don't assume an upholstered headboard can be attached to a Wood frame, or vice versa, unless that combination is explicitly supported by the current product configurator and assembly guidance.

Which Ara Bed Offers Storage?

Both collections offer storage, but not in every frame design.

Ara Upholstered Storage

Round and Square upholstered frames can be selected with or without storage.

The storage versions have four side-access drawers, two on each side of the bed.

Ara Wood Storage

Storage is offered with the Fluted wood frame.

The raised Leg-frame design is non-storage.

Why Did We Choose Side-Access Drawers?

We wanted storage that customers could access without lifting the mattress platform.

You can retrieve an item while your partner is sleeping without raising the mattress.

You also don't need to remove your bedding before accessing storage.

Each drawer opens independently.

However, side drawers require clearance beside the bed.

A wall, nightstand or nearby dresser may obstruct them.

Does Storage Capacity Differ Between the Collections?

According to the Ara engineering specifications, the storage drawers use the same nominal internal dimensions across corresponding Canadian bed sizes.

For a Queen bed, that's approximately 65 litres of nominal internal volume per drawer, or approximately 260 litres across all four.

Each drawer has a separate maximum load of 9 kg.

The difference between the upholstered and wood storage versions is primarily in their exterior design, not the fundamental drawer capacity.

How Does Each Bed Affect the Look of a Bedroom?

This is where our recommendation becomes most personal.

Choose Upholstery for a Softer Bedroom

Ara Upholstered can suit a bedroom where you want a softer, textile-rich aesthetic.

It's especially attractive if you prefer curved shapes, decorative fabrics or the visual warmth created by upholstery.

A padded headboard can also become a major feature of the room.

Different fabric colours may help the bed coordinate with curtains, rugs or other upholstered furniture.

Choose Wood for a Natural, Architectural Bedroom

Ara Wood can suit a room where you want visible wood grain, a more organic-looking finish or strong architectural detailing.

The Fluted design introduces texture through repeated wood elements.

The raised Leg-frame design creates a different sense of visual openness beneath the bed.

The Oak and Walnut finishes offer different appearances within the collection.

Wood can work with a wide range of interior styles.

It isn't limited to rustic or traditional bedrooms.

Don't Assume One Style Is More Timeless

Both upholstery and wood can feel timeless when they're selected to suit the owner's preferences.

Trends may change, but a bedroom doesn't need to be designed around every new trend.

Choose the finish and shape you genuinely enjoy.

Which Bed Is Easier to Assemble and Move?

Both Ara collections use a modular construction approach.

Their steel frames are divided into four quadrants.

This allows the main structure to be delivered and transported in more manageable components.

The exterior panels and headboards are then installed according to their specific assembly instructions.

Does One Ara Collection Require More Assembly?

The exact work depends on the configuration.

A storage version requires the additional assembly of four drawers.

A larger or more complex headboard may involve different steps from a simpler one.

Wood and upholstered exterior panels also have different installation processes.

We wouldn't declare one collection universally easier to assemble without comparing specific configurations.

What About Moving Homes?

Both benefit from the modular structural approach.

Instead of transporting one enormous assembled foundation, customers can disassemble the bed into its component sections.

We recommend following the appropriate instructions and protecting the panels and finishes during moving.

What About Repairability and Long-Term Ownership?

An important part of our design philosophy is making it possible to address individual damaged components.

Replacement parts for Ara can be supplied through Cozey's Customer Happiness team, subject to compatibility and availability.

This applies to the approach behind both collections.

A bed may remain structurally sound while an external panel, slat or connection component needs attention.

Customers can contact our team to identify the appropriate solution instead of automatically replacing the entire bed.

What About Changing the Appearance Later?

Ara Upholstered offers removable fabric covers, and compatible replacement upholstery can provide opportunities to refresh the bed's appearance.

Ara Wood's appearance is determined by its finished panels.

Customers should not assume that every headboard, panel or conversion component is available individually for later purchase.

Confirm supported options with Customer Happiness before planning a modification.

Which Bed Should You Actually Buy?

We would make the decision in this order.

  1. First, choose the aesthetic you prefer. Do you want a fabric-covered bed or visible wood?
  2. Second, choose the headboard experience. Do you regularly sit against your headboard and want a padded surface, or do you prefer a wood design and use pillows?
  3. Third, consider maintenance. Would you rather remove and wash fabric covers or clean finished wood surfaces with a cloth?
  4. Fourth, evaluate storage. Do you need four accessible drawers? Does the room have enough space for them to open?
  5. Finally, confirm dimensions and configurations. The headboard can be wider than the mattress, and not every component combination is available. If you'd like help planning your layout, book a free design consultation.

Final Thoughts: Choose the Bedroom You Want to Live In

When we introduced Ara Upholstered, we wanted to bring Cozey's approach to modular furniture into the bedroom.

That meant giving customers more control over their bed's headboard, frame, storage, fabric and colour.

It also meant preserving the everyday advantages of compact delivery, easier assembly and washable upholstery.

When we developed Ara Wood, our objective wasn't to replace those ideas.

We wanted to make the system appealing to customers with a different design preference: people who love natural-looking wood, architectural forms and a different material-care experience.

Both expressions of Ara share the same structural philosophy.

Both are designed around meaningful configuration choices.

And both are intended to help customers create a bedroom that feels personal.

If you prefer soft textures, fabric colours and washable upholstery, choose Ara Upholstered. If you prefer wood grain, Oak or Walnut finishes and architectural detailing, choose Ara Wood.

The best choice isn't the one that's supposedly better for everyone.

It's the one that feels right in your home.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an upholstered bed better than a wood bed?

Neither is universally better. The choice depends mainly on your desired design, cleaning preferences, headboard comfort and room layout.

Is Ara Wood sturdier than Ara Upholstered?

Both share the Ara modular steel structural platform and the same published frame weight limits. We wouldn't describe either as structurally superior based only on its exterior material.

Is Ara Wood solid oak or solid walnut?

No. Ara Wood uses ash veneer over engineered panels, with solid ash elements in certain designs. Oak and Walnut are finish colours.

Is Ara Upholstered harder to maintain?

It requires textile care, but supported upholstery covers are removable and machine-washable. Whether that is easier than wiping wood depends on your habits.

Is a wood bed easier to clean?

Finished wood can be convenient for routine dusting and wiping. However, it should be protected from scratches, standing water and harsh cleaners.

Is an upholstered headboard more comfortable?

A padded upholstered headboard generally provides a softer contact surface than an unpadded wood headboard. Actual comfort depends on design and personal preference.

Which is better for pets?

It depends on the pet. Upholstery offers washable covers but may collect fur or snag. Wood can be easy to wipe but may show claw scratches.

Which is better for children?

Both can work well with appropriate use and care. Upholstery offers softer contact surfaces and washable covers, while wood offers wipe-clean surfaces. Neither is damage-proof.

Can I customize both Ara collections?

Yes. Ara Upholstered offers multiple frame styles, headboards, fabrics, colours and storage choices. Ara Wood offers wood-frame and headboard options in Oak and Walnut finishes.

Does Ara Wood have storage?

Yes. The Fluted wood frame offers a storage configuration with four side-access drawers. The raised Leg-frame design is non-storage.

Can I mix Ara Wood and Ara Upholstered components?

Only use combinations explicitly supported by the current product configurator and assembly guidance. Don't assume cross-collection components are interchangeable.

Can I replace individual Ara parts?

Yes. Cozey's Customer Happiness team can help supply individual replacement components, subject to compatibility and availability.

Which Ara is more timeless?

That's a matter of personal style. Both wood and upholstery can remain appealing for many years when they suit the room and the owner's preferences.
