Sofa Bed Sizes Explained: Twin, Full, Double, Queen and the Measurements That Actually Matter

In Canada, “Double” and “Full” often refer to the same conventional mattress category, but sofa-bed sleeping surfaces do not always match standard mattress measurements. This guide separates the label on the product from the dimensions you need to measure.

Short answer: Measure three different things: the sofa's closed external dimensions, its fully extended external footprint, and the usable sleeping surface. Only the third tells you how much room a sleeper has; only the second tells you whether the furniture fits the room at night.

Bed names are useful shorthand, not measurements

On a regular bed, a mattress label generally follows a common size convention. On a modular sleeper, the name may refer to the nearest familiar size even if the surface is created from unusual modular sections. A taller person also needs to know which direction the longest dimension runs, and shoppers buying sheets need to know the perimeter the fitted sheet must stretch around.

In Canada, common mattress references include Canadian standard Twin (~38 × 75 in), Full/Double (~54 × 75 in) and Queen (~60 × 80 in) mattresses. Those are comparison dimensions, not measurements of the Cozey products.

Example configurationApprox. sleep surface (width × length)How to interpret it
Neptune three-seat Full56.7 × 75.6 in (144 × 192 cm)Wider than conventional Full/Double (54 in)
Neptune Single + ottoman25.2 × 77.2 in (64 × 196 cm)Narrower than a conventional Twin (38 in)
Orian two-seat Queen61.8 × 79.7 in (157 × 202.5 cm)Close to, but not exactly, conventional Queen (60 × 80 in)
Atmosphere three-seat Sleeper59.1 × 88.6 in (150 × 225 cm)Non-standard; check orientation and exact variant

About these measurements: Quoted product dimensions are approximate examples of named configurations, not universal dimensions for every arm, ottoman or module arrangement. Confirm the live configurator dimensions and bedding fit for the exact combination you select.

For Neptune, the three-seat Full is a useful reference layout. A compatible Single layout using a sleeper section and ottoman is much narrower but longer. Orian produces a Queen-labelled surface from just two sleeper seats. Atmosphere Sleeper is more flexible in arrangement, but its surface is generally non-standard; use its specified configuration dimensions rather than buying bedding by a Queen or Full label.

How to choose fitted sheets without guessing

A fitted sheet needs more than nominal length and width. The elastic must accommodate the actual perimeter and depth of the surface and, in some cases, the way modules meet. Before ordering bedding, check:

  1. Surface width and length, in the actual sleeping direction.
  2. Thickness and edge shape of the opened surface (some sofa beds do not form a conventional mattress block).
  3. Sheet pocket depth and elastic range instead of relying only on “Queen” or “Full” on a label.
  4. Any added ottomans or sleeper modules, which can change the overall length or shape.
  5. The manufacturer's matched kit, where a non-standard layout makes generic bedding unreliable.

Cozey's Neptune Sleep Kit includes a padded mattress topper, fitted and flat sheets, a comforter and pillows in supported kit sizes. The topper softens the feel of transitions between sleeper sections. Check the current local kit selection for your chosen layout; not every expanded custom bed has standard-sized matching sheets.

How Canadian mattress labels compare

In Canada, Twin is usually about 38 × 75 inches, Full/Double about 54 × 75 inches, and Queen about 60 × 80 inches. The Orian base Queen surface (about 61.75 × 79.75 in) is close to a standard Queen, but not identical. Neptune Full is about 56.7 × 75.6 in, wider than a standard 54-inch Double. These deviations matter for fitted-sheet elasticity. The named Neptune Single with ottoman is around 25.2 inches wide—not a standard Twin. If buying in Canada, inspect the exact fit of locally sold sheets rather than treating the bed names as a guarantee.

External sofa width is not bed width

A closed Orian two-seater, for example, is about 185 cm (72.75 in) wide, while its named Queen sleeping surface is approximately 157 cm (61.75 in) wide. The difference is not a mistake: arms and frame are part of the sofa's external width. For room planning, use the widest exterior point; for sleeping comfort and fitted sheets, use the actual sleep surface.

Likewise, a Neptune Full sleeping width of around 144 cm does not mean the three-seat sofa is only 144 cm wide—it is about 228 cm wide externally. A single number cannot answer every sizing question.

The bottom line

The most reliable sofa-bed size guide is a dimension guide, not a name guide. Record the closed sofa, the fully opened furniture and the usable sleep surface separately. Then compare local bedding standards to the actual measurements—not the marketing label alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

The words may be used interchangeably in some markets, but no: the actual sleeper-surface measurements are what matter. Compare inches/centimetres before ordering fitted sheets.

No. Orian's two-seat configuration creates a Queen-labelled sleeping surface, while Neptune uses three sleeper seats for its typical Full. The mechanisms are different.

Often, appropriately sized Queen bedding can work on the base two-seat Orian layout, but its actual dimensions are approximately 157 × 202.5 cm, so check the elastic and fit. A matched topper and kit can be simpler.

Its flexible sleeping arrangements frequently create non-standard surfaces. Compare exact dimensions and consider compatible bedding instead of assuming a standard mattress size.

Canadian note: Double and Full are often treated as synonyms in bedding shops, but compare the numerical dimensions before buying.

No. A closed Orian two-seater is about 185 cm (72.75 in) wide, while its Queen sleeping surface is approximately 157 cm (61.75 in) wide, because the arms and frame are part of the sofa's external width. Use the widest exterior point for room planning and the actual sleep surface for sleeping comfort and fitted sheets.
